View Full Version : Review: Versatile gun racks
I just got a new rack I'm really pleased with, for handguns. It's the Versatile Gun rack. Nothing high tech, just a nice, space-efficient system that can fit more pistols into a safe in less space than most other approaches I've tried. This one holds six handguns of "normal" size, and sits on one shelf in my safe. They also have some other accessories that may be useful in other cases, such as hangars for hanging pistols on the inside of your safe's door, or stackable racks, if you have a tall shelf area inside your safe or elsewhere, so that you can fit even more into a small area.
The rack is well made, doesn't scratch your nice coatings and finishes, and seems to accommodate a variety of shapes and sizes. I don't know how well it'll hold up over time, but initially, it seems like a good buy. $36.99 for the 6-gun rack (they have a 4-gun rack for less) at MidwayUSA.

I bought 2 of these myself about a 2 years ago and can honestly say that they saved the inside of my gun safe. I have 2 of the 6 gun storage racks and store a large assortment of guns in them.
I have one caution- be careful how you put in and remove exposed hammer revolvers from these racks if they are neighboring each other. I discovered to my dismay that the hammer of one gun can scratch the surface of the other if you tip it to remove it or put it back in the rack. Mine are set high in my safe and I have scratched a few of my loved ruger 3-screws with the hammer of the neighbor due to inattention.

Not to poop on your thread, but having seen these and being a horrendous cheapskate, I got a couple of the small plastic-coated wire shelves/racks made for increasing storage space in kitchen cabinets for spices, etc. Look for them at grocery stores, Walmart, etc. Most are about 6 - 8 inches long and 3 - 4 inches wide, and stand about 3 inches high. They run no more than a few bucks apiece.
Just lay them on their side with the feet toward the back of the safe so that you have the top of the shelf facing you. You now have a series of vertically-oriented, parallel plastic-coated wires. Pinch every other set together a bit to give you enough room to slide a muzzle between them.
They hold your pistols and revolvers vertically, standing upright (I suppose you could lay them in belly-up if you wanted), with enough room between them to keep from bashing into each other on insertion and removal.
Certainly not as professional-looking as the versatile racks, but two of the larger size kitchen spice racks cost me something like $7, and allow me to store over a dozen pistols in about half the space. The other $30 buys ammo.

Hey, that's cool, it's all good! Value is value, and if there's a good alternate way of doing something that costs less, that's part of what these threads are here for. Thanks for posting!
