Gauging interest in a short version of the Accu-strut for those with chopped barrels.

i voted maybe on this poll becuase, honestly, price and appearance would play a part in my final decision..
that being said, i am interested in this type of product.. and i think if worked up right could really look good with a chopped mini, and I am really interested in seeing how it could improve accuracy on a shorter barrel.
Thanks, Gary, always appreciate the honesty. I don't know either whether a strut would help on a short barrel. But that's why the poll, to see if it's worth even R&D'ing.
My "no" vote is in no way critical of the concept or the product. Simply put, my "chopped" Mini-14 is specifically set up for CQB. Along with the shortened barrel with Choate FS/FH, addition of the Ultimak scout rail, reflex sight, and Gundoc trigger job have me shooting consistently into 2.5"-3.5" at 100 yards. I'm good with that accuracy in this case. Great thread, and I'm looking forward to hearing the opinions.

I would be interested in one because i am currently considering chopping my barrel down to the shortest legal possible and installing a muzzle break or flash hider. Legal meaning 16.25 or 16.5 whichever is the limit. At what point on the barrel lenghwise from the chamber does the current model reach??? I may just cut it to suit the accu-strut which means leaving a little bit of barrel longer so it looks like a Socom m14

16" is the minimum, people nearly always cut a little extra as a legal safety margin.
I don't know the distance from the chamber, but I can tell you the end of the strut is typically 6-5/16ths" from the "face" of the gasblock.

thanks, ill measure it and cut my barrel accordingly unless you are real close to a a short one.
I've heard alot of people saying that the stiffening effect from a shorter barrel yields better accuracy, so maybe a shorter Accu-strut would turn the Mini with a chopped barrel to a sub-MOA shooter!! Wishful thinking, but I really believe some R&D on it wouldn't be too hard to yield a result be it yes or no. I'd go for it!

If it would fit on my 16 in barrel mini, you bet I'd order one. Why not try and wring as much accuracy as I can from it. I can always take it off if I don't like it.

I have been wanting to cut my 188 series mini down to a 16 inch barrel, but i was thinking of making it longer so i could use an accu-strut. If a short version is in the making then i will go ahead and cut it, otherwise im going a little longer.

I know it's an older thread but I cast a vote for yes.
I've been looking at getting my Mini chopped and a shortened strut could only help.
Make it in SS. ;)

If it would help accuracy on a shorter barrel I would sure give it a try.
How about a short version with a single clamp, along with set screws in the part that connects to the gas block? This would likely provide some additional rigidity, and the appearance would look like the M-14 (big brother of the Mini-14).

Yep, that design occurred to me, and it's a good one. Well, if I keep seeing interest...
kkina,
I own three of your Accu-struts.
In short, they work.
And, now that Ruger is selling Mini-14's with shortened barrels, you should seriously consider making a shortened version of the strut.
In fact, one of the reasons I didn't buy the new tactical Mini-14 with the flash-hider was because a barrel strut would be difficult to mount on it.
Additionally, for those who "chop" the barrels on their Mini-14/30's, it would be nice to have the option to also add a barrel strut to their rifle.
Anyway, I think you've got a great product. I believe in the technology.
Keep up the good work!
Cheers,

I would be interested. I did the shortened barrel, trigger job, and bedding, but I am still not real happy with the accuracy. I would give it one more try.
OK, I guess you guys are serious. I'll start doing some drawings. No promises on production yet, however.

Yes I would definitly buy one. I have the newer style 580 series gbcbc model and it has the shorter barrel with flash compensator and sights moved back.

If you know a machinist, with a few scrap pieces of material laying around, you can have a set made that would work just as well as the Accu-Strt/ That being said, I llooked at the Accu-Strut compared to the Hy-Bar. The solid clamps of the Hybar seem to be the way to go.
The proprietary Accu-strut clamps are just as secure as machined clamps, and avoids the "blocky" profile. Interestingly, it took more effort to develop the clamps than the strut itself.
