Hello Folks.
I go this morning to pick up my first Contender. It is an older used .22lr 10". Being a fanatic when I get on a new gun kick, I have already bought, Barrels: .22 WMR, .357 Max. and a 375 JDJ. Scopes: 2 NcStar 2.5x Illum, 2x Millett, 2.5x used T/C and a 4x Leupold. Mounts: a pair of the 3 ring Redfields, and a Weaver mt. and rings.
I am looking for a Pachmyer grip as the RH grip on the gun I am getting will not go good with my lefty grip.
What else do I need to be the best prepared geek at the range????:lol::lol:
Sounds like all you need is the ammo and targets!;) I have not shot my T/C in a while but maybe this week I can get to the range and shoot some reloads 223.

True, True. I also stumbled on a new 357 Herrett barrel this weekend for 125. Another new experience in the making.

Holy Barrels batman, when you jump in you jump in with both feet.
Welcome to the wonderful world of T/C Handguns. I started hunting with and shooting T/C Contender Handguns in 1982. The addiction is strong and I have had many, many different Contenders since 1982.
Most recently I had sold off all of my Contender Frames and Barrels, and am now in the process of replacing everything once again. I recently acquired 2 new Stainless-Steel G2 Contender Frames. These come with the new T/C Rubber Grip and Forend which feels absolutely great in my hands.
So far I have acquired a new Stainless-Steel Super 14 .22 LR Match Contender Barrel with a 3x12x Burris LER Handgun Scope, a Stainless-Steel Super 14 .223 Remington Contender Barrel with a 3x12x Burris LER Handgun Scope and a Blued 10" Bull Contender Barrel .30 Herrett with a 2.5x8x Weaver Handgun Scope. With a little luck I am going to be ordering a T/C Custom Shop Stainless-Steel 14" .30-30 Ackley Improved Contender Barrel before the week is over.
I generally use Weaver Scope Bases on all my Contender Barrels. I used to use Burris Zee Rings exclusively (2 on the light recoiling calibers and 3 on the heavier recoiling calibers). However I am currently using Weaver Quad Lock 4x4 Scope Rings on a couple barrels and so far like them just fine.
Shooting Contender Handguns can be tricky at first until the shooter developes their own technique. To some shooters this comes naturally, while others have to work at it a little. The biggest thing I have seen is shooters are intimidated when shooting a Rifle Cartridge in a Single Shot Handgun and think they need to put a death grip on the handgun for fear the handgun is going rear up and smack them in the forehead. This is probably the most detremental thing a person can do in regards to shooting one of these handguns. Rather one needs to just let the handgun recoil naturally, and even more importantly do everything the same every time for each shot.
I think you are going to be truly amazed at the accuracy these handguns are capable of from a rested shooting position. For accuracy testing or shooting Gophers or Prairie Dogs from a portable bench I like a simple sand bag (I fill mine with Plastic Pellets from an injection molding company) under the grip and a BR Model Harris Bipod under the forend. I find I can personally shoot the best from this type of rested position.
When Deer Hunting or setting up and Calling Coyotes I use a set of home made Crossed Shooting Sticks. I find with the forend of the Contender on the sticks, if I can get one or both of my elbows on my knees for added support I can do quite well with these single shots.
I have been fortunate to be able to harvest a lot of Whitetail Deer, Varmints & a few Coyotes over the years with Contender Handguns. No one ever said hunting with Contenders was easy, but it sure is rewarding.
Cartridges I have used in Single Shot Handguns since 1982 have included
.22 LR (Contenders, Savage Sport Strikers and a host of other Handguns)
.223 Remington (10" & 14" T/C Contenders & Remington XP-100"s)
6mm-223 (14" & 15" Custom Contenders & a Custom Remington XP-100)
6mm T/CU (15" Custom Contenders)
.243 Winchester (14" Savage Striker & 15" T/C Encore)
.250 Savage (14" Custom SSK Contender)
7-30 Waters (10" T/C Contender)
7mm I.H.M.S.A. (Custom Remington XP-100)
.30-30 Winchester (14" T/C Contenders)
.30-30 Ackley Improved (14" T/C Contender)
.44 Remington Magnum (10" T/C Contender)
I have also worked with a couple 10" 7mm T/CU T/C Contenders that belonged to friends, and a Custom 8" .45 Colt/.410 T/C Contender that belonged to a friend.
Enjoy your Contender(s), but remember a couple of things. Contenders can be SUPER ADDICTIVE and the next cartridge / caliber is just a barrel away.
Good luck.
Larry

Started the addiction in the 70's all you need is a fat checkbook and a lack of common sense. Alex

So how you liking your Contender?
I haven't used mine much in the last several years but I have a new use for it. I want to turn mine into SBR and use heavy bullets subsonically
