Shotgun. 00Buck up front, 3" Buckhammer for up to 'bout 200 yards.
For the broadest range of applications, AR-15/M16.

Sorry timlt, an ar just don't have the same, how do you say it..."SMACK!!" as a 12 ga.
"Broadest range of applications." If you can only own one, get the AR. If you get the right configuration of an AR, say a 20" heavy barrel, good optics, and the right types of ammo in your stash, you could do ALL the following with the same rifle:
* Precision long-range sniping up to 800 yards at human adversaries.
* Hunting animals as large as deer
* CQB and firefights where you need rapid-fire capability.
* Competition target shooting from 100 to 1000 yards (using the 80gr or 90gr bullets).
* Hunting small varmints without ruining the pelts or the meat.

Training, discipline, TONS of practice, and a good 12 gauge shotgun loaded with 0000 to 00 Buckshot.

800 hundread yards with a 5.56? "Sniping" involves killing. You mentioned human adversaries. I have never heard, let alone seen anyone kill a human being with a 5.56 round at 800 yards. I love the 5.56 too, but lets not get carried away.

overlooking obvective ...self defense hard to justify a 800 yd shot as self defense

also, most ar-15 OPEN SIGHTS (you do not want electronic sights to bet your life on) sit way too high off the bore for true QCB situations. You then have to adjust your aim at close range.
Shotgun, FTW, with the 1911 .45acp (1911's shouldnt be made in any other caliber) on the side :)

C'mon Bob, what's next a "Ford is better than Chevy" type comment.
Wait......don't tell me you like Fords too?

I will still stick with my .45acp.
Toyota's run longer than Chevy Or Ford...they might rot out but they will still run ;)

I don't understand how someone can put Toyota and .45acp in the same statement. .45acp sounds so American.;)

Pistols should be included for the portability/concealment and speed advantages. Can't easily tote around a long gun, and can't as easily or quickly get one on target, even from a single-point sling.
Most shooting incidents occur at around 7 yards, a distance which most people can close in about 1.5 seconds. It takes most people about the same time to draw and get a pistol on target. I'm pretty sure it would take longer to get a long gun on target, but even if not, the length of a long gun also shortens that closing distance.
I'm talking about the broadest spectrum of self-defense. Home defense, SHTF, or TEOTWAWKI, would make me recalculate. But a pistol is the only weapon you can have with you pretty much anywhere, anytime, and discretely.
Everyone is correct and everyone is incorrect depending on the nearly unlimited, yet reasonable, self defense scenarios and circumstances one could find themselves in.
Marlin 45 carbine

ditto Jim Mc, I would have voted 'other' as my opinion a pistol-caliber semi-auto carbine is about ideal. other than that a SXS shotty or centerfire pistol.
