I was getting ready to leave the house this morning to go to work and looked out onto the back yard one more time. I noticed something hunting in the back field. First I thought it was one of the cats doing its morning hunt, but it appeared to be larger. I then noticed that it looked like a coyote. I had to go out to the truck and get my mini 14 that I had just loaded up, then ran into the house and went upstairs to the only window facing the back. I opened the window and setup the rifle on the window seal. While I was searching for him he entered from the woods to the left going toward the woods on the right. I had about 20 yards of open space. With all the running and the rush of the chance to get a coyote, it was hard to aim with a steady hand. I thought that I was going to have to shoot a moving target, but he did stop. Instead of a broad shot, he was facing away. That made a very narrow shot at about 70 yards. I aimed the best I could and then just pulled the trigger. It was loaded with Remington 55 gr. He went completely out of sight. I did not hear a yealp or see him at all. I walked down the field until I knew that he could not be this far. I did not take my eyes off the field as I was afraid he would get up and dart away. I turned around and tried to get to the same angle to the window that I had aimed from. While I was sure that I must have missed him, I saw him laying there. Why does your mind play such tricks on you? He was dead and but steam was still coming out of his mouth. I had hit him in the back of the neck and the bullet must have entered his head. I don't think he knew what hit him. He weighted about 33-35lbs (male) and looked like he had been eating well. Here is what he looked like.........
