View Full Version : a place to shoot near louisville, ky
I live in south Louisville and am looking for an outdoor range for pistol, centerfire rifle and shotgun (general shooting range). Knob Creek seems to be the only game in town. I am looking for a range where I can shoot for more than 20 to 30 minutes an hour. It is a good range but is too crowded. I would much rather find a good gun club to join that has a range.
I would much appreciate it.

If I remember correctly, there was a place just off 31W, between shively and west point. I remember going to machine gun shoots, as well as some long-range shoots, quite a while ago.
I guess it's safe to assume you can'y get onto post(Knox), to use their ranges? I know at one point one could, but I guess that all ended w/ 9/11(?)

The range you are talking about is Knob Creek. It is so crowded because it is preety much the only game in town. There is an indoor range in Louisville, but it just isn't the same. You can still get on Fort Knox to shoot. I hear that the checkpoints can be a little difficult, but civilians are allowed. I haven't tried it myself. A lot of LEA's go there to train and qualify. The last time I was at a range where a LE was shooting, I heard gunfire behind me, turned around, and saw her muzzle because she was shooting from 10' behind the line! I REALLY hate being in front of gunfire.
BTW, a little bit of history. Knob Creek Range used to be a Navy proving range during WWII. My great grandfather worked there during the War. The Navy manufactured and refurbished 3 and 5 inch ship's guns at Naval Ordinance in Louisville, then shipped them by rail to be test fired before being shipped out for installation. Naval Ordinance has mostly been decommisioned now and a private contractor has relocated there to produce the Phalynx ship defense system, Knob Creek is of course a private gun range now, and the 3 and 5 inchers have mostly fallen silent. But a few of the living, the ghosts of the dead, and the memories of those who made such an important contribution to the war effort still move among us here. To those and all the others who served, we salute you!

There is a place that used to be called Rays, over on Kiln Court off of Bishop Lane. I can not remember exactly what it is called now, but it is still in buisness, and it is a decent range. Pretty much pistol only, as 25 yards is the max distance. If you want to shoot rifles, Knob Creek is about your only option. (Besides moving to the country like I did 20 plus years ago, where I can shoot out my backdoor!)
Has the old Ray's location reopened as a range? I didn't know. You are right about rifle shooting though. My wife is being totally unreasonable about this. I asked for a measly $602,000 to buy 218 acres in Vine Grove, Ky and she said no. She was mumbling something about paying the mortgage and buying groceries.
I SO wish that I wasn't joking about the size of my request being measly. I just want someplace that I can set up a 3000 yd. range to practice long range work.
