View Full Version : muzzle break question
Hey everybody, just found this website and a lot of you guys seem to know your stuff about mini 14's. I just bought 580 series this past holiday (first mini 14 ive owned) and i was wondering if all of the mini 14 muzzle breaks fit the 580 model? or would i have to buy a certain model?

I have a 580 and I had Gundoc install a Smith muzzlebrake on mine, which requires sending it to him so he can thread the barrel on a lathe. I would highly suggest a treaded muzzlebrake over a slip on. You can get the Smith brake from Brownells, it comes with a locking nut to keep it from coming loose. I planned on just haveing Gundoc thread my barrel for the break but I couldnt resist and went ahead and had him do he B package which is AWESOME by the way!!!
thanks a lot for the info, ill look into it!

Slip-on/pin-on muzzle brakes for the earlier Mini-14's will not fit the new 580 series. You will have to find a newly designed muzzle brake which specifically states that it will fit the 580 series.
I would highly suggest a treaded muzzlebrake over a slip on.
Agreed.

I have a question for you guys. will a 2005 580 mason M/B fit a 2006 580 barrel?
will a 2005 580 mason M/B fit a 2006 580 barrel?
I would think so.
I know of no changes to the 580 series until 2008 (or possibly very late 2007) when the barrel was beefed up.

just recieved my muzzle break. apparently the muzzle break won't fit. close examination showed the front sight blade housing is larger than the break. my 580 has protective wings beside the blade. the housing has square faces on both sides of the sight housing (were the roll pin inserts) which wont allow the M/B to slip on, second finding, the M/B bore is about 1/32" too small. Won't allow M/B to even pass 1/132" onto the front sight. Any help here would be greatly appreicated.
apparently the muzzle break won't fit.
Sorry to hear the muzzle brake won't fit your Mini-14.
Upon doing a little research, I discovered a lot of people complaining about the fit of the Masen slip-on/pin-on muzzle brake. Sometimes it fits, sometimes it is too loose, and sometimes too tight. Apparently the manufacturing specifications are not very stringent. Some people have been able to modify the muzzle brake to make it work, and others have not.
Per the John Masen website, the muzzle brake should fit 2005 & later.

Other than returning the brake to where you purchased it, I have no suggestions; maybe someone else will comment on this particular muzzle brake.

I figured out the problem after close observations. The muzzle break I purchased belonged to ruger mini 14s between the years of 2005 - 2007, but the major thing I didn't account for was ranch rifles. I currently own a 2006 ruger mini 14 ranch rifle 580 series. The new ranch rifles have newer front sights with protective wings. I didn't account for that. My lack of planning shouldn't constitute an emergency on the companies end. So I just sent back the incorrect muzzle break. And in about a week should be able to have my mini all prepped for the range. If anybody has any questions about 2005 and older ranch rifles go to johnmasens.com and purchase item#1403BB.

The thing that grinds my gears is my impatience with recieving new toys. I have a tendency to be a 5 year old in front of a christmas tree on christmas eve. I get antsy. I can't wait to get my new toy. I plan on modding a few items. I'm planning to install the muzzle break, attach an accu-stut, either cryogenic treatment or have everything parkerized, attach new tactical stock, upgrade my rear sight, bed my stock and trigger work. The only problem is it's going to take a very long time to complete my project. I have a 1 year old daughter. Kind of explains alot. I'm limited to money spending. With my sum of things, it will cost roughly $1500 to complete my rifle. I plan on shooting a match with my old man. I'm planning to shoot against his usmc eye. He has a M14. Served in the marine corps, job title force recon marine. I plan on taking my mini 14 and go shooting 200+ yards. I know I don't stand a chance. But it will be fun. Thanks again for all you help sticks. Much appreciation.
