View Full Version : Nato 5.56 Chamber
Is their any gain to rechamber the mini 14 .223 Remington to the NATO 5.56 or would this be a mistake?
I am under the impression that doing that would reduce the pressures when you shoot some of the "cheaper" ammo available, such as Wolf yet have no negative effects when shooting .223 Remington factory ammo.
Why would you want to do that? The MINI-14 is already chambered to fire either the .223, or the 5.56 MM cartridge.
It would seem like a waste of money, and time to me to do that.
Good shooting!

I'll do it for you. Send me a check and I will do it with magic. :) Once the check clears you will magically have a 5.56 NATO chamber on your mini. :D
Its already a NATO chamber. It even says it in the manual.

As per my Ruger Armorer's manual, every Ruger Mini-14 is chambered for 5.56 NATO, NOT .223.
Thank you. I was not aware of that.

I dont think its the size as much as the pressure. Minis can handle the extra pressure in NATO rounds. Some firearms cannot.
There is a minor difference in dimensions as well, adding to the pressure. But it is still the pressure.

Thank you. I was not aware of that.
No problem man. If you hang around long enough you will find out more then you ever thought about the mini. :)
I found this to be very interesting and appealing:
Wylde Chamber for the .223

For those of you that do not know, the 5.56x45 NATO is NOT exactly the same as a .223 Rem. The 5.56 spec allows for slightly longer chambers for higher pressures. The .223 has a tighter chamber around the neck and is shorter which allows for a bit better accuracy. You can shoot .223 ammo in a 5.56 chamber, but it is DANGEROUS to shoot 5.56 (surplus for instance) ammo in a .223 chamber. BE CAREFUL. What the Wylde chamber does is allow for 5.56 ammo with slightly tighter chamber for better accuracy. So you can shoot both 5.56 and 223 safely with good accuracy.
I've shot both 5.56 and .233, and the only difference I think was the 5.56 shot hotter. I would rather shoot .233, but it really does not matter I do not think.

The Ruger owner's manual states, and I quote:
".223 Remington (5.56mm) cartridge."
Further states the "rifle was designed to use "US Military standardized or factory loaded sporting .223 (5.56mm) cartridges manufactured in accordance with industry practice."
See page 11 of your manual or look at it here....
