Im looking for a quality scope for decent price(200.00 or less) for my 580 series mini 14 ranch. Im only going to be shooting about to 100 to 150 yards. Im wanting to be able to use the scope rings that came with the rifle. What do you guys suggest?

For under $200 you can't go wrong with Leopold rifleman for $179 at most Wal-Marts.

i just looked at Walmarts website and it didnt show that they carried any leopold scopes, mostly just Nikon and bushnell.

Leopold scopes are available at my local Wally World but nothing on their website.

Ruger supplied rings are one inch in diameter and the supplied ones are medium-height. This may limit you to an objective bell width of 32 to maybe 40mm. Ruger should exchange the rings for a different height if you call and ask. They have short and tall rings. You might even want to just buy extras off the Ruger website so you have a variety.

What kind of shooting will you be doing? Target or plinking or hunting? For target work, you might want to look at the Burris Sportsfield in a 3-9x32 scope for under $100. Try looking through the offerings in MidwayUSA or some of the other online shooting accessory vendors.

I picked up a Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40 for $200 at my local Sportsman's Warehouse. Even came with a pair of decent binoculars. Might have been on sale but I can't remember.

This might interest you, http://www.riflescopes.com/departments/13/rifle_scopes/leatherwood_rifle_scopes.htm, the Leatherwood website, http://www.leatherwoodoptics.com/index.html, very good scopes with quality glass at Bushnell prices.

They make a fine scope......

FWIW I've collected a bunch of scopes over the past
30 years or so. Just to see how they compare I set up
some old newpapers at different distances and did a
little comparison. Surprisingly a Bushnell Scope Chief IV
was as clear as the newer $450 Leupold and more than
all my Burris's combined (and I'm a Burris fan).
Give ebay a look see, they sell for a fraction of a new scope.
B&L glass is tops.
The new ScopeChiefs are not the same quality.

Look in the hunting part of PU and see the one mounted
on my elk rifle, never let me down and has been used
and abused for many years -mini 14 tested too.

The 1.5x4.5x currently on ebay would be perfect on
a mini.

i have a burris fulfied ll 3-9x40 also. mine has a lighted rectical and i paid just under $300 shipped new, so im guessing $200 for non lighted is about right. i have not had a single issue, i wish it had screw on lense caps like my bsa scope's though.

lol, your gonna love me. i just got a email from www.natchezss.com they have some sweet deals on fulfield ll's. 3-9x40 fullfied ll with either spotting scope or binoculars is $199.99 or if your feeling frisky 3-9x40 fullfield ll with garmin handheld GPS for $233.95. if you buy any of these and you dont want the scope, binoculars or gps hook me up:) $199.99 for the scope alone is a good price in my eyes, so i would jump on this if i needed another scope. i just bought two new ones:(

I have heard the same thing elsewhere. I like the Ballistic Plex Reticle. Their Fullfield II 3-9x40 Illuminated is going to be my next scope.

Consider the Sightron 3-9 x 42 scope, on sale for $199 at MidwayUSA. Just go one myself. I tend to agree with the user review that says, "Leupold quality at half the price." Well it's not half (depends on which Leupold you compare it to, certain Leupold models can sell for less than this) but regardless, they have great quality glass with a lifetime warranty, and are worth checking out.

I have the Burris promo 3x9 with the binos and like them, the scope is on my 10-22 target, but I haven't tried the long distance stuff yet. The promo models are not made in the U.S. nor are the binos. The 6.5 x 20 that I got was U.S. made but the spotting scope was not. I'm happy with stuff I got but hope the more expensive ill ret model is U.S. made. I am a Bushnell fan, From the Banner on up, and the Simmoms Aetec is also a fav.

This has been my favorite just about everything scope. I have or have had them on Minis, .350 Magnums, .375 H&H, HK91s, .22s....and so far no failures of any kind. One of the reasons I like the scope so much is it can be mounted lower than most any other scope as it has a straight objective bell.Remeber also, a scope in not just some glass thrown into a tube...it is an optical instrument that has to be able to take tremendous G-forces and remain intact. I have seen and had too many "like Leupold" scopes fail...especially on semi-automatic rifles. This is mine on a Choate stocked Mini30...the target is at 100 yards from sitting...and it has not changed zero from the day it was sighted in..Bobhttp://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b77/RJM52/030806range005.jpghttp://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b77/RJM52/030806range004.jpg

would something like this be ok, or is it a waste of money?

I put a Bushnell ScopeChief 1.5-6 on a friend's Mini14 and it has held up fine...but is one of their better "lower" grade scopes that was not made in china. Most of Bushnell's lower line scopes are made in china and from what I have read about chinese optics and longevity it is a waste of natural resources....Remember that this scope is going to take a pounding both in recoil and the slamming of the action....Bob

"would something like this be ok, or is it a waste of money?"

I've had really bad luck with all of the Bushnell "sport" lines, also the blister pack Simmons and most Tascos. The Banner is as low as I would go in the Bushnell, World Class in Tasco, and Pro Hunter in Simmons. The cheaper scopes not only come apart, the POI changes from power to power. I'm not really sure the stuff I'm calling ok would last long, but they shoot decent
