View Full Version : stock bedding?
i think im gonna try to bed my wood stock myself. i do not have a bedding kit and of coarse i need to mail order one because no gun shops by me seem to have them. i have a whole bunch of epoxy laying around and i was wondering if this would work. is a bedding kit just epoxy? i also read that pam cooking spay works as a release agent, which i happen to have in my cabinet. will this work. also i see some people use powderd metal in the mix to make it stronger. i happen to have some hand warmers here too which is filled will powderd metal. do you think this will work? any tips from you getto stock bedding fellows?

I like the accu-gel type kit, it's thick and stays in place.
You wouldn't be the first person to bed a stock with
off the shelf epoxy. Paste wax is what I've used
for a release and JB weld for epoxy..have no experience
with cooking spray.

I'm sure it will work as long as it does not run everywhere like the trigger group! Just don't use any WD-40, I'm sure the Pam spray will be fine. The metal will help to make it thick but you don't want too much it might not stick to the stock very well.
-good luck, tri
The best off the shelf epoxy I've found is MarineTex. It mixes up thick so it won't run as bad as some. Also the last time I used it I tried some clear plasticoat type spray paint as a release agent and it worked very well.

Why not WD-40?
And, does anyone know if there are "How To" bedding instructions anywhere on the net?

Try this, http://www.imageseek.com/m1a/M1A_Bedding/, it's for the M1 but the action is basicly the same.
I'm not sure, but i dont think that WD-40 will let it harden right. I'm not 100% sure but that would be my guess.

Someone used WD-40 and glued the action to the stock, it did not keep the epoxy from sticking to the action.

Thanks. I checked it out and it does look pretty helpful. I'm still not sure I want to do it myslf. Has anyone seen the 3 point bedding they do at Accuracy Systems, using pins/screws? What do you think of that?

;) I use "micro-bed"bedding compound from brownells or as I have done in a pinch used JB weld and never had a hitch in the bedding. For a release agent I use moly or lithium automotive grease, epoxy always hardens and can do the bedding in multiple stages.I am about to experiment with some bondo as a bedding compound as well as a stock modification compound.<_<

i bought the brownell's acraglass gel kit at least a year ago, but was hesitant to bed my rifle for fears of permanently attaching the action and stock. anyways, i went ahead and bedded it (factory wood) yesterday, and it was a piece of cake. the acraglass was too thick if you ask me, but it's probably better to be too thick than too thin and runny. i bought a can of aerosol brownells release agent, but the acragless kit probably had enough for a rifle or two anyways
