Well I'm going to work on my place in Texas over the Thanksgiving holiday. Last trip I cut a drive way thru the woods to the building site, and set up my mail box (just to more or less mark my territory) This time I'm building a storage shed to store my building materials in. Can't wait to become a real Texan. Only 2 more months and I'm moving.
You all have a happy Thanksgiving. Don't do like I do and eat too much  .
Bring it on Cajungeo!!! How far are you town?

Probably a dumb question, but I don't know your history that well. I seem to recall you lived in Louisiana and were in Hurricane Rita. Are you moving to Texas because of wanting to get away from living right on the Gulf Coast? Or is it work related?

I'm 10 miles from town rutro.
Yes it's mostly work related. I'm retiring from work :D . I'm tired of dodging hurricanes, and floods. My yard here in Louisiana has crawfish living under it. The water table is only 3 or 4 ft down.
Here is a pic of my place in Texas. As you can see I have a little work to do to build a house here. I told my realtor I would be happy with a jungle and that's what I got. :D

Welcome to Texas! From the looks of it you place looks nice send us more pics as your homestead comes along.
Hey Caj look'n good!!! How big a peice of woods did ya'll get? You going to cut a range in? Be nice to set on the back porch and bust a cull deer ever now and again.
Are you planning on building or going with manufactured houseing? You know I'm an old electrician by trade, don't have a license anymore so I can't get anything inspected, but I still remember how. If I can lend a hand give me a shout and I'll see what we can do. Used to work for beer on weekend projects but the Dr. cut me off....... so now I guess it's iced tea.;)

Thanks guys. I bought 3.5 acres. It is restricted. Land is so scares, I had to get restricted. Lots of buyers, and not much land for sale in this area. It's near Sam Rayburn Resv. between Angelina, and Davy Crokett National forests. There is a shooting range around somewhere. Have been looking for land or house and land 2 years, so I was happy to get it.
I'm building the house myself. I'm going to try to do everything except slab, rough utilities, sheet rock, trusses, and brick. Rutro I may take you up on the elect help.
I cut a rough drive so I can at least park on it, and built a 11' x 14' steel shed. It is hard to do much now as it's a 6 hr round trip. I put up the mail box just to mark my territory, and let people know someone is moving in. Woops there goes the neighborhood! The people are very friendly, have met 6 neighbors already. Can't see any neighbors here in the country, they live either down the road or deeper in the woods.
I have to work till the end of Jan. then I can move on up :D . So I really begin Feb 1. Then it's full guns!

Welcome to Texas. Anybody that likes guns is AOK in my book and especially here in Texas. The wife and I are moving up North of Ft Worth and planning on finding some rural land after we get settled into our new house.. Too bad it is not any a beautiful area like your picture. It is only a mile from a nice clear water lake...so will have to drive some place to find a place to shoot. The DFW area is new to me, even though I have lived most of my life here in Texas.... Hope you enjoy your new place.

Thanks TAJones. I'm one step closer. I'm retiring tomorrow. Have some loose ends to take care off so I should be up there in a few weeks. It will seem wierd monday, not having to get up early to go to work, but it will be a good kind of wierd.

Here's to a long retirement, and happy house building, Caj!
:sniper:
Way to go Cajungeo!!! Hope ya enjoy and have fun, it's what we put all those years in for.
When the Doc's turned me out, early and as unplanned as it was, even though I didn't set the alarm I kept wakeing up at the same time for a year at least!!! Those old habits die hard. That 3.5 acres will keep you busy enough to make the change with ease I bet.;)
Congrats on the retirement Caj! Maybe we can get some of us together for a fun shoot somewhere this summer after your caught up.;)

That would be great.
I see that rutro lives on Mustang Island, not too far from where I live at the moment, which is Victoria. This summer we are moving to a few miles north of Ft Worth, so Cajungeo, where in Texas are you actually moving to? East Texas covers a lot of land and I use to hunt up in that area when I lived in Houston. Another side question if anyone has an answer. I am wanting a 17 HMR and at the present looking at the Ruger 77/17 and also the Remington 597. but other than rimfirecentral and here I can't find much information on these. One guy over on rimfirecentral claims to have converted a 10/22 over to handle both the long rifle and also the Magnum and while that would be what I would like to do, nobody is talking about how it is done or parts needed. Could anyone point me to a site that might have the info or parts needed. All I am looking for is a one gun solution to this so that I can shoot both the long rifle and the HMR.

I don't think you will find a rifle that will shoot the different ammo you want with out major modifications. That is you can't switch it back without a lot of work. Better to have 2 rifles.
Near Lufkin.
welcome to east texas. we have lived in the palestine area fo over twenty years now and plan to stay here . lots of good country and good people.
the wife and i retired to the country for many years but recently moved to town because of her health problems .

Thanks for the welcome bobd42. Palistine is pretty country too. I pas thru there on my way to Ft Worth sometimes.
Hey Caj, is there alot of 'yotes and hogs to hunt in your area of TX?
cajungeo

There are always yotes, and I have heard there are hogs in the national forests.
I can say something is digging my whole place. There are little root holes everywhere. It started last Thursday. Only found a couple of readable tracks. It looks like tiny deer tracks. The rest is like a stick stabing the ground. Don't know what is doing it. Thought of an armadillo, but the little holes are all over the place, if it's a pig its a little pig. My neighbor shot a beaver last year. I found a couple of small trees with the beaver knaw marks. Kinda like a big sharpened pencil.
Say did you see the hog this 11 year old kid shot?
there are plenty of both, in this neck of the woods . i think that the hogs are
the biggest problem however . lot of folks are trapping them but they just keep on multiplying .
Hey, Cajungeo! First, welcome to ETX! Second, the armadillo is your most likely culprit for the small holes you're finding everywhere. They're looking for bugs just under the surface. They love fireant mounds too.
We moved to NETX in 1979 from the Dallas area. Whole 'nuther world out this way! Bought 35 acres in the middle of nowhere and put a mobile home on it. Couldn't find a job here, so I continued working in Dallas another 9 years. That's a long commute. Finally got a job with the local sheriff, and I've been at it for 18 years now.
I have several friends in the Lufkin area if you need local info.
Hmmph! Paved road. You're still a city boy.

Hehe when I first came out I thought CR stood for "country" road. Found out it is "County" Road. In Louisiana they didn't have counties.
hey there olfart do you ever get over to reclaw to listen to the bluegrass
music ? we live in palestine and go over every once in a while .

Been to Reklaw a couple of times, but not for the music. They have a fly-in every year at a ranch strip there, and I've been down for that a couple of times. I think it's the last weekend in October or somewhere in that vicinity. Gas prices kept me home last year and likely will this year.

Just went thru Palastine, and Reclaw 2 days ago on my way back from Lubbock. A couple working buddies fly their planes to that flyin at the ranch. Will have to check it out.

Hope your building goes well. TX is pretty gun friendly. I moved out of TX to IL...not the best idea gun-wise, but i'm living with it for now.
Welcome to Texas Pard!!! I live north of Longview.:)
Well you were right in my neck of the woods . We live in the Palestine area . We used to go to Reclaw to play Bluegrass music every fourth saturday .
