Hi folks. Can't decide which scout scope mount to get. Ultimak or Amega?
They both seem to be similar, with the Amega(sp?) about $20.00 cheaper. Can anyone help me decide? I have read lots of posts about each , and each post seems to love their particular choice. Is there a significant difference, or is it just personal choice?
Any help with this choice would be greatly appreciated.
This is for a blued Mini 14.
Thanks, Robert

Ultimak sits down lower to your barrel, meaning that you'll have a better check weld on a traditional stock, because there will be a lower line of sights available through your optic. Also, with some optics, you may very well be able to "cowitness" your iron factory sights right through the optic's lenses, for example some red dot sights.
Also, the Ultimak is known to act as a stabilizer for your barrel (it's a side effect of clamping the rail to your barrel), which therefore tightens groups and improves accuracy. A lot of Mini users have noted this affect, but you may also get this with the Amega rail as well. However, I have the Ultimak, and definitely wouldn't trade it for anything.

I have the Amega and would like to have gotten the Ultimak. As mentioned before it sits lower has more slots so you can put your rings where you want them. I believe that www.riflescopes.com has them(ultimak) for like 70 bucks last time I checked.
Ultimak is the one I recommend to my customers. It's worth the extra money. The Ultimak sits lower allowing a better view of the sights and keeping the optics low. It also attaches better. The mid rail strap on the Ultimak is a heavier part that attaches with screws on both sides and has plenty of clearance for the operating rod. The Amega rail has a spring steel strap that screws on one side only using a hook on the other. It really needs to be trimmed or the op rod will run into it and create a little binding. It's not enough to jam it, but it does create an extra friction point in the cycling sequence. After enough wear and tear it will settle in.
The big selling point for the Amega is the cost and the side mounted mini rails for hangin things on. With the Ultimak you can tap the holes in the front and put in weaver rings for lasers or whatever, but the Amega already has them. This can make the Amega quite atractive for the price. If you don't plan to hang items on the sides of the rail, go with the Ultimak.

I have 3 Amega scout mounts. I love them all and would not trade them.

Awww, gunrun, now you went and confused the issue. We just had a nice airtight consensus going for the Ultimak. :)
Seriously, I don't think a person would go wrong with either of these rails. Whatever you buy, I'd try to buy one at a place that has a generous return policy, in case you put it in and find out for whatever reason that it's not what you want.

Nope. The UltiMak is 149.00 bucks from these guys.
If you are going to buy something from these guys (I personally would not recommend them) make sure you find out if the item is in stock. Otherwise I hope you are not in a hurry because it could take months.
I got the last one they sold for 79.00 bucks but it took three months to get it. I bugged them so much they doubled the price.
Sorry guys, I guess it's all my fault.
If you decide to buy the Ultimak, I'd STRONGLY suggest getting it directly from Ultimak (it's currently $129), at:
http://www.ultimak.com/buy.htm
You're not likely to beat that price from any of their dealers, though as others have noted here, it's occasionally possible to find a deal where somebody bought them in volume.
If you buy from Ultimak, I'd suggest calling them, and ask for a guy named Lyle Keeney if you call, he's the designer of the thing and is GREAT to work with. Lyle knows TONS about Minis and other combat and military-style rifles, and can really be a huge resource to you not just for the rail, but for configuring your gun the way you want it with a rail, a quality optic, etc. He helped me so much with my rifle, I think I should be sending him a tip for all the help he gave me. Lyle with work with you and if you find you cannot get something to work on your gun, is very generous and friendly about taking it back (but be VERY careful to handle it delicately while mounting and such, so that you don't put dings in it). They will also be quite competitive and match prices with anywhere if you want to buy a high quality military-style optic, like the Trijicon Reflex or Tripower. And the same return policy with those optics, if you have problems.
I cannot recommend the Ultimak company highly enough, just because of the great service they provide, not to mention the quality of the mount. I urged Lyle to consider making some custom sights for Mini's too, I think it would be nice to have some more rear sight options in the market than what we have available now, and I think Ultimak could really do a job on a good rear peep sight for target shooting.
Also, the instructions that come with the Ultimak are nice and clear. Even I had no glitches in installing it.

Has anyone tried the EOTEC mount on their Mini 14?
I have read before about messing with the gas block screws and I notice that some of these mounts require redoing the screws and re torqued ends.
Any comments or suggestions?

Just received my Ultimak yesterday. While I haven't taken it for a spin yet, I can say that fit and finish are immaculate on it. No cheeziness detected anywhere.
It was the first time I've ever dared to dismantle the gas block in the past twenty-one years. Much to my surprise, the rifle did not self destruct. The bushing used at the gas port locates the whole assembly, with only a tiny amount of slop. In other words, not much guess work required to install the Ultimak. I don't own a torque wrench, so just used "German torque" on the block screws.

GySgt....Your rifle looks great.
Can you give some info about your add ons?
GySgt, that looks great. Congrats on the purchase of the Ultimak. I'm biased of course (as I own one), but I think you really made a good choice and it will serve you well. Let us know if you see a positive effect on your groups as well; I noticed it tightened mine by an inch or more.

Gunny, that is one nice mini you have there. About the Trijicon, did you get the BAC reticle or the NSN 4 MOA dot?. If thats a Mepro never mind.
I am leaning towards the Amega myself. Primarily due to the dead space on the Ultimak. The Amega rail starts right at receiver, and I think that this is where I would most like to mount an EOTech site. My rough guesstimates put the minimum eye relief using the Ultimak rail at ~15". It looks like the Amega would allow for ~12" of eye relief, which I think I would prefer. The third alternative would be a standard weaver rail on the receiver. I have a new model, so it has the "ranch" receiver with the mounts. This would allow a maximum relief of ~9".
I'd really like to hear from some more experienced users of these non-magnifying optics, like the Trijicon Reflex/Tripower or the EOTech to see what they have found works best for them as far as mounting location. Looking at the gallery, it looks like most people wth the Amega, and therefore the ability to do so, are putting their sights just after the receiver as I was planning. Thanks all.
Oh, last thing, anybody know the weights of teh Ultimak and the Amega? I read somewhere that somebody found the Amega to be heavier that they were hoping.
BTW, GunDoc , one of your sample Rugers in the middle of your page (http://www.greatwestgunsmithing.com/minicustom.htm) says "Ultimak - !!!!", when it is clearly an Amega rail. Thought you might like to know. It actually had me confused for quite some time.

Yep. Good eye. I fixed it, and added my last mini project to the page....this you gotta see. (Sorry, Ben)

All I can say is, Wow! That is quite a piece of work, certainly a one of a kind Mini. You didn't miss an inch. That's crazy. For some reason it gives me this crazy impulse to have you do one for me in a tie-dye pattern. I guess it woudn't blend in very well though.
What do you think...something like this maybe?
(Sorry, I stole somebody's gallery picture to do this)

I have my aimpoints mounted just about where GySGTD has his mounted. I find that it allows for a good balance to the piece, places it at a comfortable carrying location and aligns it with my hand placement on the front of the stock for easier lense cap flip up and activation.
I have an Amega and it does have see thru slot, I don't know if the Ultimak has this feature or not. It's all good!
Nice lookin' gun!!
