View Full Version : Red-dot. Which mount?
Which mounting system is the better of the two:

They are about the same price, but one mounts on the Ranch-rifle scope mount, and the other throug the side plate. For me it seems like the side mount will be higher than the 'scope-rail'.
I have a 187 Ranch Rifle.

Neither. Get the Ultimak scout rail.
I can't criticize the two shown in your links, but I really like my Ultimak scout rail which I installed earlier this year. Right now, I keep a quick release mounted Meprolight 21i on it for trunk duty.

Agreeing with them. I use an amega ranges mount and put the scope as far forward as i can.
If you got to use one of the two linked use side mount. That way if the red dot fails you got your iron sights.

+1 for amega ranges (I have owned 3 over the years and loved them all)
If you must have an "over the receiver" mounted scope on your mini, go with the second of the 2 that adapts to the ruger scope base mounts. If your ruger does NOT have the ruger scope bases machined into the top of your receiver your only choices are to have the receiver drille dand tapped or go with the side plate mount. The side plate mount would be my LAST choice due to its rocky mounting system.
Is that the B-Square mount? I bought one once the darn thing didn't fit! I have the Weigand, it's a great mount.

You can see it on my mini here:

i like the second one, looks like my weigand which i love. i like the optics close to my eye, or would do the amega rail, that's good too.
I'll second the notion of getting a scout rail: either the Ultimak or the Amega Ranges, you can't go wrong. Side benefit is they stabilize your barrel and tighten your groups.
#1 - UltiMak
#2 - Amega Ranges
#3 - Weigand
Those would be my choices in order.
I have looked at the amega ranges and ultimak rails too, but they are very expensive to get where I live (needs to import from US), but looks relly great. However, I am a bit sceptic to have the red-dot or scope mounted forward on the rifle as I am used to have the optics closer to my eye. Do you feel that it is better to have it mounted further away from your eye as opposed to over the receiver? Why /who not?

The forward "scout mounting" position as we call it in the states places a scout type scope (or pistol scope) forward. This allows you to keep both eyes open when engaging targets and thus a wider range of view. They are very effective on the 90% of what mini-14's are used for. As a side benny, most of the scout mouts will stabalize the barrel allowing for greater accuracy from the gun.

Heres a pic of my setup using a mueller red dot (which i love). Use both eyes open and super fast target acquisition. The mount is like that of your option two. Would have gone with an amega however with the Clark GBS I wanted to "balance" the weight additions.
