The most common barrel lengths for AR15’s are 16 and 20 inches. The Mini-14 has an 18.5 inch barrel length. Is there a reasonably easy way for me to find out how these differences in barrel length affect the performance (velocity and energy) of the common 55gr FMJ projectile?

more specifically for M193 and M855

in theory you want a barrel long enough so that the powder finishes burning just as the bullet leaves the barrel.... any shorter and you lose velocity, any longer and you lose velocity. Less velocity = less momentum = more bullet drop.
generally, the longer the barrel, the flatter the trajectory.
I'd like to know what the max length would be for the .223
anyone?

Not sure of the max.
Remington makes a model 700 with a 26" barrel
