Diebold Election Systems Inc. expressed alarm and state election officials contacted the FBI yesterday after a former legislator received an anonymous package containing what appears to be the computer code that ran Maryland's polls in 2004.

Cheryl C. Kagan, a longtime critic of Maryland's elections chief, says the fact that the computer disks were sent to her - along with an unsigned note criticizing the management of the state elections board - demonstrates that Maryland's voting system faces grave security threats.

The Diebold code was secret, and was used in 2002 even though illegally uncertified — even by private analysts under nondisclosure. Now that it's being "opened by force," the first concern from Diebold, the government, and the media is that it could be further exploited by crackers. What if the voting software were open from the beginning, so its security relied only on hard secrets (like passwords and keys), not mere obscurity, which can be destroyed by "leaks" like the one reported by the Sun? The system's reliability would be known, and probably more secure after thorough public review. How much damage does secret source code employed in public service have to cause before we require it to be opened before we buy it, before we base our government on it?

In 2004, the exit polling in Ohio showed a clear lead for Kerry, yet somehow Bush came up with it. Diebold electronic voting was used extensively in Ohio.

Whether you think it's a wacko conspiracy theory or just water under the bridge, consider these points:

With all the corruption being exposed in the Republican party lately, from Abramoff to Foley, you'd think a little election rigging wouldn't be too far fetched... <_<

And for you right-wingers, what if it's the "lefties" that hack into the voting machines this time? I'll bet my left testicle you'll be crying foul then...

I have opposed these machines being implemented in PA. I spoke at great length with mu county commisioners as well as a PA voting commission representative about them.
The majority of the voters in my district are opposed to them. It was up to the county comissioners to implement the use of them.
The first reason i got was if we did not do it voluntarily federal monies will be withheld and we wil be forced to purchase these machines later.
I asked why the comissioners did not take the stand against them as their constiuency wanted. If the constiuency was willing to forgoe federal money.
The reply was shocking. A neighboring county refused the machines and told the fed where to shove their money. The comissioners were threatened by the feds and told they would be arrested. They had better implement the use of diebold machines if they want to stay out of jail.
