is it just me or does it seem if u focus on a smaller area on a target it helps to hit the target rather then aim at the target as a hole?

Uuuhh, yeah...
"Aim small, miss small".
If you are shooting at a squirrel and you can see it's head, then aim for the head. But if you can see the eye in the head, aim for the eye. And if you can see the pupil in the eye in the head, then aim for the pupil.
That way if you miss the pupil, you will at least hit the eye. And if you miss the eye, you will at least hit the head.
My Grandpa taught me that when I was 8. About 10,000 squirrels ago...

Reds? You mean fox squirrel? Are they big or tiny?
If you want to learn to be a good shot, get a single-shot .22 with open sights. Then go on a squirrel-only diet.
The hungrier you get, the better shot you will become. ;)

Fox squirrel are big. I've seen 'em as big as a small cat. What your describing sound like eastern red squirrel, not much meat on 'em.
Eat what ya kill... good for you. Good luck hunting. When you get a couple nice squirrel, just cut off the head, feet and tail, skin 'em, and gut 'em. Put 'em in a pot of salted water and boil 'em for an hour. Then throw 'em in a skillet and fry 'em up.
Or boil 'em for two hours, de-bone the meat and use it in anything you want, stew, gravy and biscuits, dumplings, whatever.
Yum!
