1.My Marlin Model 39 Mountie .22
2.My HK91 7.62x51
3.My 1898 Krag
4.My 1895 Winchester
(I''m going to fudge here)
5.Either my M1 Garand, M77 Ruger .30-06, M77V Ruger .308, .30-30 Marlin 336T, .44 magnum Marlin 1894, AR15 or Mini14....Then there are my muzzleloaders...
These are all rifles I currently have to pick from.
Picking ONLY 5 is really not an option, thank God.

As to 5 rifles I'd LIKE to own:
1.Steyr AUG. (I sold mine and wish I hadn't.)
2.1903 Springfield, high number (see comment for #1.)
3.DSA FAL
4.Sharps 1874 in .45 or .50 caliber
5.Spencer 1865 carbine, .56-50 center fire

Marlin 39, Sharps 45-70, AR-15, M24 Sniper, M1a...... but 5 would never be enough.

Give up all but five of my babies? No way!

But if I did, I'd keep:

AK-47

Mini-14 Ranch Rifle

M-1 Carbine

Savage Model 99 .250-3000

Remington .22 Fieldmaster pump

Then I'd hide the rest...

I'm surprised nobody has listed the AR platform.

I view it as one of the most versatile platforms available to man. You can convert it to several pistol calibers including 9mm, .45 and 50cal.

You can also choose between several rifle calibres ranging from .22 to 7.62x39.

Must have depends on the need. I'm not preparing for TEOTWAWKI, so my needs are simple are related to what I like to play with today.

In no particular order:

US Rifle Caliber .30 (M1 Garand) - It still turns my crank.
AR-15, various configurations - I may be a Ford man, but this is the Small Block Chevy of rifles. Lot's of upgrades, replacement parts, ammo, etc.
Winchester '94, the old real deal. I have one that's over 100 years old, and it may be far from pretty, but it's a link to the past.
Ruger 10/22: If there is a second small block Chevy in the rifle world, the 10/22 is it. From the manufacturer, it doesn't have a lot of soul. But what it does have, plus a buck fifty, will make it yours.
Sharps, any model, real or reproduction. A heavy rifle with a heavy but heavenly action makes you appreciate the difference between rifles of the past and what we have today.

1 Saiga .308 new 20 rd mags on order.

You seriously bought those for what they're asking? I sold my converted S-.308 when I saw what they were charging for hi caps, and that they made them completely out of plastic.

For the price of the S-.308 and a handfull of those mags you could either have or be real close to a FAL or CETME or something.

These would fit the bill if I could only have 5 guns. With these a person could hunt anything and have a good time.

1- lever gun ( I like Marlin's but a Winchester or Savage would do)
2- AR15 ( again I have a Bushy but any quality made one is acceptable)
3-10/22 ( hard to beat, tough & accurate)
4-Mk 2 Ruger bolt rifle in stainless & the old style nylon stock ( ya, the ugly one) .06 or 300 win
5-pre '64 mdl 70 in a 7x57 Mauser

I would put it like this:

1) A 22LR rifle, the most allround firearm there is. I like semis so my choice is the 10-22. It inexpensive, have high quality and its very fun to shoot. If I like to modify it, no other rifle have more aftermarket parts. The 22 is also usable in my backyard since its subsonic rounds are ideal suited to a sound moderator. Ranges 50-100 yards.

2) An airgun - they are more accurate then the 22LR and quieter, ideal for backyard use. Most important is however that its not so powerful. I can shoot it towards the sky without fear that somebody or something gets hit. The pellets are very cheap and they dont take up much weight or space. My own choice is the BSA Ultra, a supercarbine PCP. Ranges 15-50 yards

3) A varmint rifle. I use it for hunting small game in long ranges so a flat trajectory is my main concern. I would go for the .17 M2 since they are fairly quiet and have a very long range for its low power. I would supress it even if it always runs at supersonic speeds. My own choice is not clerar here, but I really like the CZ and some rifle from this brand might just fit me nice. Ranges 100-150 yards.

3) Something for home defence or mid size game hunting. A levergun is a must. My take is the .38/.357 calibre and perhaps a Marlin or Henry..? Ranges 40-80 yards.

4) A rifle for moose or other big game. Here in Sweden many shooters like the 9.3x57/62 and I cant fault them, my take will be a traditional bolt action rifle, perhaps a Husqvarna or a newer Carl Gustav. Ranges 80-200 yards.

5) Have no idea here...

if you could only own five rifles what would they be.
If I could only own 5 or the top 5 that you must or should be owned. Not to nitpick, but two very different and broad questions with many considerations if you ask me, and since you did here goes.

If I could only own 5, my thinking would lead to their specific purpose, Which would be brokendown further to hunting, self-defense, plinking, target shooting, classic, historic, military etc. And several other considerations including but not limited to reliability, easy of use and ammo supply. But I will stick with just the "5 you should own", and in some of their most common usages in the CONUS.
With those being hunting, self-defense and plinking for the sake of this post.

My choices are and not in any particilar order.

HUNTING RIFLES YOU SHOULD OWN:
1. Winchester 70, cal. - .30-06
2. Reminton 700, cal. - .243
3. Weatherby Dangerous Game, cal. - .375 H&H
4. Winchester 70, cal. - .270
5. Ruger 77/17, cal. - .17 HMR

SELF-DEFENSE RIFLES YOU SHOULD OWN:
1. Colt AR-15 m4, cal. - .223
2. FN FAL, cal. - .308
3. Springfield Armory M1A, cal. - .308
4. PTR 91 KF (HK 91 clone), cal. - .308
5. Remington 700, cal. - .308 mounted with a top line tactical scope

PLINKING RIFLES YOU SHOULD OWN:
1. Ruger 10/22, cal. - .22 LR
2. Savage, cal. - .17 HMR
3. Marlin 39 cal. - .22 LR
4. Winchester 94, cal. - .22 LR
5. Remington 572 Fieldmaster, cal. - .22LR

MY 5 picks from these 3 catagories, choosing from the listed rifles after much thinking would be:
1. Colt AR15 m4 - .223
2. Springfield Armory M1a - .308
3. Winchester 70 - .30-06
4. Winchester 94 - .22LR
5. Ruger 77/17 - .17 HMR

There were many things I took in to consideration before making the choices I made for the "My picks catagory", and some would pull double duty in certain situations. There were many that I would like to not have left out at all, for example the Winchester 94 in .30/30 and I guess that there are a lot more. But it does become hard after awhile and the 94 would fit into many different catagories and if you asked if there could be only one or one best all around rifle, I would most likely choose the Win. 94 in .30/30, it is good for basic self-defense, hunting and target/plinking situations and it is a classic/historic firearm. And many, many other reasons. And with Hornady's new ammo I believe that the popularity of the lever action in of it's self will grow. Too bad that those idiots stopped making it, but thats another story for a different thread.

Anyway, happy shooting :ar15:

I don't love the AR platform but I will say:
1) MGI lower reciever with AK mag well, AR-10 (308) mag well and 300mag mag well and 223 amg well. (I cheat ;) ) might as well throw in a 22lr conversion unit also.

2) marlin 45-70 guide gun in 45-70. I would prefer the Alaskan take down version in SS

3) rem 870 shotgun with vang comp barrel, scattergun night sights and knoxx stock

4) rossi 357 lever action with 16 in barrel (my all time favorite gun)
5) ruger 10/22

That should cover it.

thnx guys ,these are all really good suggestions. ok i guess the whole reason i started this thread was because i got the itch to buy a new rifle. this is what i own.

12ga shotgun
mini 30 ranch
marlin 60 sb
savage 10 308
beretta storm 9mm

i have been trying to save up for a m1a but i just cant seem to hold on to $1500 bucks long enough to buy one. what would you buy for under $500 bucks. honestly $500 is even streching it, so the cheaper the better. mauser, 10/22, nagant, sks, im kinda lost and im open to any suggestions. i know, i know im the annoying guy that goes out to dinner and asks everyone else what he should get to eat. help a noob out.

I know you said rifle, but there's not many guns as fun and cheap to shoot as a .22 pistol. Semi-auto, SA or DA, take your pick. Also good for varmints. ;)

I see there's no mil-surps in your collection... perhaps a Mauser or Mosin-Nagant?

Get a saiga .233. I bought one for only $269.00 and spend the rest on
magazines. Galil .233 mags and AK74 East German Bakelite mags work
on my .233 saiga. Shoots accurately, too, hate to say this, better
than a regular mini-14 and cheaper mags, too.

My favorite shooting guns for fun:

ruger 10/22- shoot it all day for about $10 and everybody makes parts for it if you want to "mod-up" later

ruger 22/45 handgun- reliable, cheap to buy, cheap to feed (but a handgun, not a rifle. Sorry).

Mosin nagant M44 or M38- Great shooters (very impressive accuracy), cheap to buy and feed. Also lots of mod stuff for later (the mouser sporter "deal" of the new century IMO)

Swiss K31- everyone should own one to understand what "built like a swiss watch" means. Very impressive for any price, especially for $100-$150. Hornady and Wolf now amke ammo for it too ;)

There are MANY, MANY others out there.

Now there is no way I would give up all my fine guns for five, but if I HAD to, these are the ones I would have to keep:

One of my Russian Simonovs.

My Finnish Model 28 Mosin-Nagant.

My Heckler and Koch Type 91

What would you buy for under $500 bucks?

I would buy a VEPR and once I had a little more money built up I would have a few little things done to it and invest in magazines.

If not that then a Saiga, which would be a less expensive alternative.
