Factory gun cases that pistols and revolvers come with at purchase time seem to have one use: they store the gun on the way home. After that I never use them because there's no room to carry the ammo in the case. I prefer the soft zippered cases that will let you store extra magazines. I usually load mags the day before I go to the range. It's a shame the factory cases don't allow space for anything but the gun because they look too nice to throw away but they actually have no use plus I have to find a place to store them in my house. Why pistols arent sold in soft zippered cases I'll never know.

...probably because the manufacturers have to have SOME kind of hard case to protect the gun during shipping, so it may well be cheaper to use an injection-molded hard case than a soft case AND a cardboard box. I agree the factory plastic cases are a PITA. As you said, they're good only for protecting the gun, and maybe one extra mag - no room to store more mags, accessories, or spare ammo.
Furthermore, if you want to retain maximum resale value, you need to store the box and papers.
I've solved this problem for myself by only buying used guns (mostly!). Usually the previous owner already lost the factory case, saving me the trouble of storing it!

Some states require the sale of a "hard locking case". I think its kinda like that certified spent case included in almost every new gun box. I think maybe one state actually require having hte case in the box but manufacturers just hate to do things more than one way so in it goes for everybody. Kinda a CYA thing that diesn't limit their sales.

Personally I found one good use. I have a stack of them that keeps my gun cases off the floor!
