Is anyone familar with this rifle? I had never heard of it until yesterday, when a buddy offered to sell me his. It looked like a decent rifle, kind of like a poor man's Ruger #1. The only thing I didn't really like about it was the barrel band (like on the 10/22). Could I drop it in a #1 stock?

Thanks,

Rut

The #3 is the ugly step child of the No. 1 IMHO. As you said, it has the barrel band and the lever is different as well. It somewhat resembles the lever on an old Spencer or Sharps. I don't believe it will fit in a No. 1 stock. Similar rifles, but definitely not the same.

The #3 used to be a real sleeper to pick up used. It came in sort of a strange assortment of calibers, .45-70 (before it became popular again), .30-40 Krag, etc. I think with minor lever mods the #1 stock will fit. I did have, unfortunately, the cheesy barrelband and buttplate like the 10-22. The action is basically a #1.

How does it handle the .223 round? Is it a shooter?

One of my big I wish I would have boughts is a #3 in .223 I saw a couple of years ago for $150. I want one. They were made in .223, 45-70 and .22 hornet. I don't think they had any other calibers. I have been looking since then they are rare and cost three times that. they are built on the #1 action.

I have a #3 in 223 and love it the twist is 1in 12 so it doesn't like anything over 60 grain bullets but 55-45--and 60 grains it loves.
ooo ---the barrel band is removeable
if you want a great shooter find one

I have Ruger #3s in .223 and 22 hornet. They are very nice.

They were also made in 30-40 Kraig.

I have always wanted one in 45/70.
