Just noticed these are on sale. Seems to be a nice scope, limited lifetime warranty, only downside I see is it is heavy. Best chance at decent quality for under 100 bucks!
Not a good deer hunting scope. Too much power and you don't want AO. You may not need the 50mm objective for varmint hunting either.Simmons always has goodstuff on sale. Nothing special about this.

What is AO exactly? What is it designed to do and what are the drawbacks?

Actually, I have only heard good things about this scope. Only downside is it is heavy- 50mm obj. Do you have any experiance to base your opinion on this? How bout next time just saying thanks for the heads up, and for taking the time to let us know about a deal? If your not interested just move along, no need to put down my post.

While I think it's too big and clunky to be an ideal deer hunting scope, I'm still interested in it. I was thinking of starting a (very) low-budget, long range rifle project, and that Simmons might be just perfect for the job.
Dedicated long range shooters will now sneer at me, of course. Okay, it's no Zeiss scope - but it's not $1,500 either. For someone of my modest means, someone who wants to get into long range centerfire rifle shooting (as a hobby, and maybe to bust an occasional varmint) on a razor-thin budget, it might just fill the bill.
It's not like I'm heading to Iraq on a military sniping mission, after all.
So, Splinter, I *do* appreciate the heads-up! Unfortunately, Midway now shows that the Simmons is "Unavailable- Seasonal Run." :(
The sale price is good until July 31, though - maybe they'll have a few in by then.

My most expensive glass is a Bushnell Banner 6x18 AO with a 50mm objective. My wife bought it for me as a Christmas present. Probably cost less than $150. It is perfect for the hunting I do. Most of my shots are 135-235 yards 30 minutes or less till dark. Sometimes I think about buying one of those high dollar scopes but the ones I have looked through didn't look any better than the one I have. If you got money to waste or a corporate sponsorship then a $1500 Swarovski is for you. Nothing wrong with cheaper scopes though IMO.

I have a couple of these Whitetail Classics. Nice scope for this kind of money, the fellows at Rimfire Central seem to love 'em. I use mine on a Savage .17hmr and a Stevens .243...pretty good bang for the buck on these inexpensive varmint rigs. I just placed an order for some ammo and noticed that they're back in stock at Midway (July 22, 06) if anyone is still interested.

Adjustable Objective. This gives you the ring on the objective end of the scope to focus/adjust the paralax for a given distance. Some scopes (especially 22 scopes) are fixed for 50 yards.

Hi Splinter, Have you seen the scopes on page 711 of Midway's 06 catalog. These scopes are Optronics scopes by Horizon. I haven't seen them before. They are downright cheap and say they have a lifetime warranty and on top of that there is a $10 rebate. There is no shortage of scopes today, but most seem to be made in China. Leupold serviced my 3-9x40 under warranty, they overhauled it like new, so I bought another Leupold a 4-12 x40. I still took notice of the Optronics scopes on page 711, the stainless model looks like a surgical instrument!
