Out of these calibers which one would be more accurate? This will be my first bolt action rifle and i need help in choosing a caliber. Right now i want it for possibly whitetail and for fun. And if someone has this rifle how does it perform? Thanks

Well, if youre after whitetail, the .243 will do it nicely. Light recoil, short action...sweet shooting round.

If youre maybe going out west and shooting over longer distances and want a little more ooomph on target, the .270 is an icredible cartridge.

You know, you may want to look at a clean, used Remington 700 or Model 7 before you get the 710. Ive seen some mildly worked over 700's shoot 1/2" groups at 100 yards. The 710 is designed to sell to a low price point; I'm not saying you cant put meat on the table with it, but the 700 is a MUCH nicer rifle, and if you shop around you might find a used one for about the new price of the 710. Food for thought.

I pesonally like the 270 and the 30-06 for deer. The 270 shoots a little flatter but as far as accuracy (group size) I'm not sure there will be a lot of diff. Your luck of the draw on guns will probably have more to do with accuracy than the caliber.
A friend of mine has a 710 and loves it. I considered buying one back when I was in the market for a new deer rifle but got scared off by the shop owner. He said they were having problems with them. That's been 4 or more years ago though. He may have been trying to steer me towards a more expensive gun though.

If you're looking for a good, low cost rifle check out the Stevens (Savage) Model 200.
http://www.savagearms.com/st_200short.htm
From the website:
Standard trigger, blued barreled action, free-floating and button-rifled barrel, top loading internal box magazine, and swivel studs.

It's basically a Savage Model 10/110 without the Accu-trigger.

I bought one in .308 so I could hunt deer on the rare occasion that I might want to or, more likely, have a wide choice of range loads and ammo.

I've seen them as low as $250 new.

I have no experience with the 710 ut from what I've read they are ot one of Remington's best. Research both rifles and see what sounds best. I still advocate .308 as a nice flexible caliber though.

wow, i do like that stevens. It only makes it a Harder choice in choosing a rifle. On the 710 i was looking at the 308 but it's not made for that rifle.

Also guys not to throw anyone off-topic or anything like that, but instead of starting a new thread, does anyone have any info on the remington 7400 auto loader? As far as accuracy, feeding problems or anything like that? I would go with the 308 or 30-06 on this one I know i had mentioned bolt action but i like this one now too.

Hey Kestryll, how does the stevens shoot? Accuracy? Reliability? I seen it comes in .223 also. I might forget about the deer hunting and get this just to have it for fun.

Unfortunately I've only had mine out once and I didn't get to sight it in. I had several friends from my work who are new to firearms along so I spent the day jumping around playing safety guy. "Don't point that there!" and "Finger off the trigger when you turn around!" ;)
It functions perfectly just from the little bit of shooting I did with it. Next time I go out I'll have an answer on the accuracy but I expect no problems given Savage's reputation.

I really was torn between the .223 to match ammo with my Mini and .308 for variety. I got the .308 but may later pick up a .223 barrel, you can swap them out in a Savage/Stevens fairly easily, and a .223 bolt assembly.
I like to have my cake and eat it too! :D

I have a 710 in 270. While it is quite accurate and has a good trigger pull I wish I had purchased something with a more comnventional design. Mine is one of the early ones with a plastic receiver and bolt body. as well as the hydraulically pressed in barell. these are for people who hunt once a year and never shoot more than a box of shells out of the gun in a years time.
resale value is horrible. So if you find one used it will be cheap.Probably under $250. if they are priced the same in your area as here.

i would check oput the savage/stevens line very closely before choosing.
As for the autoloaders sorry I cant help I have never had one.

My bro has a 7400 and has never had a problem with it. At least 3 of my friends have/had and refer to them as the "Jam-master".
