View Full Version : Well guys, here she is!
I finally decided to go with the Bushmaster varmint special. I added a harris bi-pod that pivots from side to side, and topped it off with a leupold variex 2, 6x18 long range varmint duplex. I broke in the barrel yesterday, and she shoots great! What do you guys think?

loooks good dude
I will be going to the range, hopefully tomarrow, and I will post some targets. Right now I am shooting Black Hills 50 gr V-max. Has anyone found them to be pretty accurate? What would be the most accurate out of the bunch. I am going to start reloading them in a few weeks, but until then, I would like to buy some accurate rounds. Thanks for the compliments guys, appreciate it greatly!---Bob
Before I moved to Kalifornia I used to have a Bushy with a 20" barrel and it liked the PMC silver box 52 gr hpbt`s. I did not reload back then. Have not tried Black Hills ammo in my Kalifornia legal AR, but 2rangers` Hornady 60gr vmax/24.2gr Varget handload shoots really well. I`ve shot some tight groups while experimenting with Hornady`s 68gr hpbt and Vihtavuori N 140 (I`ve posted the reults in this forum) ...now I`m checking out the VVN133.
Only handloads, once you`ve found the right mixture will reveal the true accuracy potential of your rifle...and it`s fun!

I have found that with my 24" DPMS varminter, Black Hills 55 gr. Moly coated hollow points have shot exceptionally well for factory... ( Under 1" groups at 100M...)
Although I have some reloads that will put three rounds in the same hole, able to fit under a pencil eraser, at 100M...
Reloading is the way to go... but you need to shop around and find what factory ammo yours likes... mine shoots 1.5" groups with Black Hills FMJ... my 20" AR will put those in under .75"... its all in what "flavor" your particular rifle happens to prefer... But hey... that gives you reason to buy 15 different weights and bullet styles, to try them all and GO SHOOTING even more!!! :D :D :D
Well I went to the range today, and all I could get was 1.5 " groups today @ 100 yards. The wind was blowing pretty crazy too. I tried black hills 55gr fmj, and I tried ultramax 55 gr fmj. I shake a little too, so I know that don't help. Any mods I should consider doing to this rifle? Well, I will shoot again this weekend and see what happens. All your info is greatly appreaciated.
Bob
Looks great. I have a good buddy that uses one with a Gen 3 Night scope for coyotes. He has had zero problems with it for 3 years. His only mod is a palm swell grip for it.

In regards to the range trip, heres my recommendations...
If your rifle has a bipod... DONT USE IT... Get some sandbags, or a folded up towel, or the like... something that will allow your rifle to rest STABLE on the bench, so as all you need to do is pull the trigger... otherwise it is rock solid... If you are still shooting larger than inch groups with a particular flavor ammo... Chances are, it is NOT the ammo you want to continue using in that rifle...
I know it sucks to hear it, and I even have a hardc time myself getting it through my thick, CHEAP, head... If a certain ammo doesnt shoot accurately, no matter HOW CHEAP... what is the point of buying any more of it?!?!? If I need to shoot SUB-M.O.A. groups... and I can only get 1.5" with winchester white box... Obviously, I should NOT BUY winchester white box, and need to spend the loot on the GOOD stuff (whatever it may be) knowing that when I pull the trigger, my rifle will hit exactly what the crosshairs touch...
Good luck and good shooting!

for general shooting/plinking/shooting random crap i use federal american eagle (AE223)....it's relatively cheap and has always shot well through my AR...hell i just picked up a 500 round box of it earlier this morning:lol:

Addendum to my previous post...
I guess I just want to add that I am not saying never buy cheap ammo...
I love the cheap stuff to plink with!! By all means!!!
Just when it comes down to accuracy... and when you NEED to be right on the money, you should know what shoots the best out of your paticular rifle, and have it zeroed for THAT particular loading.
Then when you want to shoot cans, or bottles, or just have fun blasting stuff... the less accurate, cheapo plinking rounds will certainly do the trick!
GunMan, That's one sweet AR. Indyarms is right buy a box of any kind of 223 you can find to see what your AR likes. That will all so point you in right direction when you hand loading for it. I second the American Eagle 50gr both my Bushmaster and Mini like it. Mike
