Don't know about local hunting laws in your area. They would be a good thing to research first. Personally, I think the 40S&W round froma carbine would be limited to deer size game or smaller. You would have to worry about mag size though (most likely).

I'm sure you could kill a deer with the 40 but I think anything bigger than a coyote deserves a little more power. I say don't shoot a deer with the 40 unless you wake up with him in the tent with ya.:D

In most states the minimum handgun round for deer is the .357 and it is considered marginal. If you look at the stopping power thread in handgunsMisc you will see how the .40 compares. I would say for things under deer size it's a matter of getting close enough. I also know that when I lived in Wisconsin (a long time ago) it was illegal to be hunt with a centerfire rifle outside of deer season. Bottom line though, you will need to check your regulations.

hmm my state only law for hunting is no more then 6 rounds mag n chamber limiting devises are ok like the pencil in a shotgun for birds if i put a peg in my 10 round clip limiting it to only take 5 would it be legal or would it have to be permantly altered

Why not just throw a quick dimple in the mag body or drill a hole and put a screw in. Just solder the end of the screw in with silver solder and make it flush so you don't hang it up on anything.

As long as you modufy the mag so that you can not put more than 5 rounds in it while you are hunting. A bolt through the mag mody as I mentioned above should work nicely.
