X-Ray Glasses
From an original 1950's comic book advertisement: "Amazing Illusory 'X-Ray Vision' Instantly! A hilarious, laughingly funny illusion!" What kid did not order or dream of ordering classics like the X-Ray Glasses that we saw in the comic books? The real gag of these specs is that the rest of the world has this sneaking suspicion that they might actually work! (X-Ray Glasses a.k.a. X-Ray Gogs, X-Ray Specs)
Availability: Usually ships the next business day.

I have to use eye protection at the range. Any kind of glasses will do. I have been using a cheap pair of sunglasses, some Oakley knockoffs, but they are kinda dark and they have too many scratches (they scratch real easily). I have looked a couple of times at Gander Mountain but the less expensive glasses look "funny" on me and the expensive ones are too expensive. I think that I might just get some safety glasses with clear lenses. I usually dont wear any eye protection or ear protection in the field, at least not while hunting.
I have seen this thread a couple of times and I was interested in what ya'll came up with, but...not much.
I need a good, clear or lightly shaded pair of glasses to wear at the range in the $35.00 or less range.
Anybody?

i norm shoot federal 3" power shok slugs (F131RS)....3 inch 1 1/2 oz magnum.......muzel velocity of 1600 fps....these suckers kick hard...fun as hell to shoot
i put 10 through last friday...my shoulder is still a little sore
Billy_B0b, Mike 56, hate to butt in but shouldn't the screw in choke tube be removed before shooting slugs? Mike if you reliazed this to began with I appoligize, if not I don't wish to see anyone have a 12ga. barrel blow up in their face. The lake we are on gets covered up with ducks every fall. I was entertaining the idea of smoked duck and started looking at steel shot. My ol' Mossburg is just that, old. When I found out that the barrel and choke probably would not hold up to the steel shot on full choke I stoped thinking of the smoked duck and started in on new shotgun......... that has not happened yet either.
Ruto, That's why i asked if i could shoot them in my 870. I have a modified tube in it right now. Do i need a slug tube? Is their such a tube? Or are you saying i just remove the tube and shoot the slugs with out a tube. Will that hurt the threads? Thank you Mike

i've never heard any such thing....how would the screw on tube affect the barrel at all anyway??? i ususally just put in 1 slug when i shoot the 3 inchers....can't do more than that cause i need time for my shoulder to recover

BB, You've got a cylinder bore in your 870, you can shoot whatever you want. It sounds like Mike's got a removable choke tube. If that is the case, you wand to get a "cylinder", "slug" or "rifled" choke tube before you start feeding it slugs. A "modified" choke might cause dangerous pressures as the slug tries to pass through the tighter diameter of the choke.
tlrpunk, Thank you i have asked a lot of people this question and no one seems to know. Which tube would you use if you were going to shoot rifled slugs. Mike
Mike 56 what tubes do you have? Your 870 is obviously a smoothbore. So a "cylinder" or full bore sized tube would be a good choice. A lot of people who live in areas where deer hunting is shotgun only have rifled slug barrels and they are very accurate. However you probably wouldn't want to shoot birdshot through one. My Mossburg is the first gun my Dad gave me and it's going on 40yrs. old. The choke on it is permanently attached to the barrel and is adjustable from cylinder bore to full. Since I don't wing shoot anymore I removed that barrel and put an 18" full cylinder, 3" chamber barrel on and installed a Buttler Creek folder on it for home defence. Since I don't have a removeable choke tube type barrel I'm not up on a lot of the new stuff. I never heard of a rifled choke tube but hey there are a lot of things I don't know. If there is such a thing it does not sound like a good idea though. If the tube was rifled and the barrel was smooth when the slug got to the tube traveling at a high rate of speed it could cause a problem, or at least that's the way I see it. Those choke tubes restrict the barrel and are intended to to make the pattern smaller. Lead bird shot is soft and will deform a bit and is more forgiving than the mass of a slug. So I would ask someone in the know like a gunsmith.
Here's a link to remington's website. It describes the constriction each choke tube has in the form of an interior diameter measurement.
http://www.remington.com/products/accessories/gun_parts/remchoke_specs.asp
Notice the "Skeet" choke is actually larger in diameter than a cylinder bore. The "Rifled" choke is specifically designed for slugs. It is supposed to put a slight spin on the slug as it exits the barrel.
Rutro, Thank you for your reply. I went to the Remington web site. They say to use improved tube for rifled slugs and the rifled tubes are for sabot slugs. Mike
tlrpunk, Thanks for the link. Mike
Cool!!! I might have to get the 18" barrel threaded for some of the Mossy choke tubes. Those sabot rounds would have to be the most devastating personal defence rounds you could get hit with. This ol'dog learns something new every day.

As for the original question as to shooting glasses. I use my ray bans normally or some pretty good welding type sun glasses I bought from Orchard Supply for like $20 that are professional grade. I would always recomend glasses when shooting to prevent degredation of your eyesight. You only get one pair of eyes after all.
If I'm on an indoor range I use a pair of S&W glasses I got at some confrence somewhere back in the day. No complaints. People might laugh, but you will have the last laugh if you're shooting a mini that kicks brass at them. Then they'll understand why you wear glasses. Its not always your actions taht cause the problem at the range. Kinda like wearing your seatbelt. You don't wear one becasue you are the bad driver (well...) you wear one becasue of the other shmucks out there.
rutro, I talked to a gunsmith today he said you could rifled slugs with a full, mod, improved cylinder barrel or choke as well as sawed off barrels. The improved cylinder and sawed off being the most accurate. Mike

Now see Billy Bob. Just give it a little time and it is like a party in here.
I'm going to the range tomorrow so today I went to ACademy and I wasnt leaving without something better than my scratched dark sunglasses. For $9.99 I bought the best thing they had. It is a pair of yellow lensed Beretta Shooting Glasses and they are little better styled than the rest of their choices. They also came with a slickery nylon bag w/ drawstring to keep in.
I think they are fine for the range but I would like to have a light lensed pair of RayBans for anytime anywhere but I dont have the dinero for those at this time.

I once knew a guy who would only shoot with rose color clases on (lenses). No joke. He was a doctor and qupted me some study that said the rose color glasses made you more calm and reduced fatigue. Don't know if its true but he sure was a good shot :)
