Has anyone tried the Accuracy kit from E. Arther Brown Company (www.eabco.com (http://www.eabco.com))? I currently own a Ruger #1-V that was made in 1976. I am not sure how many rounds have been put through this gun but the accuracy is not there. 2-3" groups are common at 100 yards. Here is my question: Should I invest in a new barrel for this gun, or should I buy a new Remington 700? I want a gun that will shoot 1" groups at 100 yards. I know a new 700 will fit this bill but I love my Ruger #1. Has anyone re-barreled a #1?
Thanks

Have you tried different loads with your gun? This just does not sound tight for a #1.
If you want it re-barreled, it is easily done by a competent gun smith. There are several different barrel blanks available from companies for replacement or changing to a different caliber.
I have not tried the kit that you mentioned above, sorry.

Honestly, I have only tried 2 loads in this gun, both were Hornady. I am not a reloader but do a lot of target/varmint shooting. This gun has been shot a lot in the past 20 years and I thought the barrel may be worn.
I would like to change the caliber from 22-250 to 223, mainly to have a cheaper option when it comes to ammunition but also because I have heard the 223 is slightly more accurate than the speedy 22-250.
I havent thought about a simple barrel/chamber change. I was thinking about adding a heavier barrel because this is a bench gun. Could a local gunsmith do a barrel change? and how much does this service typically run?
Thanks

Price depends heavily on the barrel you choose, the smith that installs it, etc... Barrel swaps for ruger #1's are pretty easy though as it is a breach loading single shot weapon. Go to a local shop and ask around. You'd be supprised on the range of prices. Figure $150 to $200 for the barrel (more for higher quality) and about $150 to 200 for the smith work (very guess-temet figuring).
Not cheap but if you're happy in the end its worth it.
yes I installed one on my #1 in 300 win mag and it stopped the flyers for sure. Its not a simple bolt on job though it really has to be glass bedded to work well. Actually quite a bit of work but well worth it in my opinion.

Completely false. Don't waste your time changing caliber.
I installed the forend kit you describe on a #1 in 300 win mag and it stopped all the flyer problems I had had for years. No matter what you do as far as rebarreling goes the accuracy kit is a must do and it is a bit difficult. I did it myself but if I was to need it on another one I'd have a competent smith do it.
