This one I built from a parts kit a few years ago. I ordered a new Springfield Armory reciever through my FFL guy for $85, the kit was about $150. All the parts were un-issued G.I. M2 (missing the FA components), brand-new barrel, and the stock was a sorta beat Korean war vintage M2 which I refinished.

My gunsmith installed and headspaced the barrel for $40, I did the rest myself. Notice the M-16 flashhider (drilled out to .320) and the slightly shortened stock with recoil pad, adds about 3/4" total.

I have a scope mount and used to have a red-dot on it, but got tired of changing the batteries.

Yeah, I cut the little wooden nub off the end of the forearm, just like it this way better. I still have it so it can be re-attached.

For under $300 it's basically a brand-new G.I. M-1 Carbine (well it was 2-3000 rounds ago!) and it's the most fun gun to shoot out of my entire arsenal! ;)

Nice m1 Boogey. How does the m1 compare to the mini-14? Recoil/ Bang?

It's less recoil, not quite as loud either. Not quite as accurate as my Mini-14, especially past 100 yards. Doesn't have near the killing power for hunting either, though I did kill a deer with it once, using Winchester semi-jacketed hollow points, which are the only hunting ammo I can find that will feed through the M-1.

But it's small size and light weight plus the light recoil makes it the most fun for shooting reactive targets like coffee cans and old plates at 100 yards. It shoots really fast too without jamming, and I've even bump-fired it a few times.

How does the 30 carbine stack up against the 357 mag out of rifle length barrels? Looks like that would be a good armadillo burster.

I dunno! Never shot an armadillo with a .357 rifle. The .30 Carbine works great on them though! Punches holes right through 'em and sends 'em floppin'! Like it was made for it.. :D

Ha ha! Well congratulations, FWR! Wouldn't have been a SKS that you traded for, would it? ;)

Welcome to the .30 Carbine Owners Club!

Yer gonna love that thing, SPG has real cheap Wolf ammo for it...

What's a good price on a M1? I ran up on a Universal last week for $375.
Are there any brands to stay away from?

I would try to stick with the USGI manufacturerd Carbines. I am currently trading a rifle, magazines and some ammo for this one below. I am estimating the value of what I am trading tom be $4-500, really depends on whom you may talk to. Try the online gun auction websites for a basic range of what they are going for. I would keep in mind that a lot on those sites are inflated 15-20%.

Universal is NOT military-spec. A lot of things are different, they won't fit a mil-spec stock without mods, the charging handle is a weaker design and often cracks. $375 is too high for one, in my opinion. They generally go for around $200-$250.

It's hard to find a decent bonafide vintage 40's or 50's for under $500 anymore. If you just want a good shooter, I'd say either build one as I did or check out a new Springfield Armory one, or IMI makes a mil-spec, I'm not sure how much but there's another thread on here somewhere on the Springfield.

Bogyman nice M1 good job and you can't beat the price. I own a Universal i bought it used but it had been hardly shot and looked like new. I paid 300 for it. I like the rifle and it's a good shooter. I think the GI M1s are a lot better maid and are a lot nicer rifle. Mike

Thanks Mike. Hey, I didn't mean to knock your Universal carbine, they are good little guns for the money. I had one once, and the operating handle cracked where the bolt-cam fits. I welded it and it cracked again, so I sold it cheap. Maybe I just had a lemon, or maybe it had been abused. Sorry about that! :(

Here's the same Carbine as in the first post except with the Enforcer stock.

Boogyman no offence taken the surplus carbines are a lot nicer. That enforcer stock is sweet. Mike

Thanks Mike. ;)

I was thinking if I end up keeping the Enforcer stock, I might try and see if I could install an AK under-folder on it.

Anybody have a measurement for one? I need the width between the hinge-pin holes.

Boogy: those enforcer stocks are pretty rare and are going for a pretty high price these days. I don't know if I'd chop into it if I were you. Might be some better aftermarket alternative out there you might want to try first.

They also made a paratrooper folding stock is a lot easier to find (and cheaper too) than another enforcer stock. I know the grip angel is about identical to the enforcer stock too so maybe you could try altering one of those instead if they don't fit the bill for you. I've seen a copy version selling for pretty cheap (relatively to enforcer stocks) in shotgun news.

Its just getting harder to find original parts for M1 carbines these days.

I know it's hard not to fiddle for some for some of us "gun nuts"...... but I wouldn't touch anything on that awsome rifle.

Really? Wow.

How much do you figure the Enforcer stock is worth, anyway?

Just curious... ;)

The last time I saw one for sale (years ago) they were going for $200+ for originals. Find the right buyer/ collector and they will go for much more.
Crazy stuff!
I bought my first m1 carbine (mil surp) for $150 and tehy looked at me like I was crazy because they were "junk surplus" back then. Now the same gun sells for $800 (numbers match, GI original). Crazy what supply and demand can do to ruin the fun of shooting (and de-valueing) your old guns :(

That's why I traded mine. I just wanted to chop it up and all kinds a stuff that shouldn't be done to a gun born on 10/42.

You never told me you were going to chop-up my Mini!:o

Rest assured.......the Carbine will not be altered, unless I find factory correct parts.:)
