OK, so I got the wrong impression from a post on a 10/22 thread and thought they were talking about favorite target to shoot at. They were talking about target competitions. My bad.

So I started this here becasue I thought some might be interested in good target ideas. Here are some of my favorites:

1- Empty propane tanks (obviously 5 gal or smaller). I make sure to release all of the gas and then perforate them with a 308 round at the base. I flush them with water to make sure I don't torch myself when I later cut the top off with a torch or saw. You can paint them over and over again and work great for rim-fires. The smaller camp stove ones can be hung from trees, etc... and the big ones hardly ever tip over.

2- The clasic bowling pins. They just take one heck of a beating and still hold together.

3- Reactive metal targets for handgun tactical speed shooting. Great stuff and produce a satisfying plang sound when hit. I gotta figure out how to hide a midget downrange that can re-set the things for me automatically though:D

4- Good ol bad guy targets in color. No I don't use the politically correct blue targets...idiots.

Always looking for more creative ideas...

dumy handgrenades I wouldn't be to close though as when shot they act like live handgrenades:blink:

Old, outdated paint cans, if you don't mind a mess.

Also milk jugs or beer cans full of water.

We used to have an old beat up R/C boat, stuck a coffee can on it and one of us would zoom it around the pond while the other shot at it with a .22 semi-auto. It was a lot of fun until once I opened up on it with the M1 Carbine, 30 shots in 4-5 seconds and it disappeared in a huge geyser of water never to be seen again...

Chinaberry trees. Start shooting about 6 or 8' up then as you cut it down pick a spot about two foot lower and repeat till you have firewood for another year. Saves wear and tear on the chainsaw and helluva lot more fun.

Here in CA some police departments will not shoot at the typical white on black background or black on white background targets because they are afraid it will apear they are training to shoot black or white people (pick your law suite). So they developed a blue "person" on a white backgorund. Think of your more politically correct agencies and I think you get the picture. I think it sounds an awful like what come out of the north end of a southbound horse!! Can we say crazy!! Its not like they're shooting at pictures of "gang bangers" or "meth cookers". Its a black or white generic depiction for pete's sake!! To much. I saw someone get seriously reprimanded for shooting at Bin Laden and Sadam targets in CA once. I guess it's not politically correct to shoot at terrorists in CA either.

Boogy: you crack me up man. I just get this picture of an inocent little boat out cruzing around in a pond when this hail storm of 30 cal bullets rains down like the finger of God!

Seriously though, that is a great idea. I am going to start looking for an r/c boat to shoot at.

My fav is cheap soda b/c they explode. If you ever get your hands on old computer hard drives they're pretty fun, esp for comparing the effectiveness of various calibers-at killing hard drives. Speaking of calibers, an embed Foxnews reporter said that when he first got to Iraq, he rode around in an LAV with a 25 caliber chain gun.

I am going to try to get a 25 caliber chain gun and shoot an r/c boat.

Speaking of boats...When I was a kid, I used to make my own boats-pontoons out of empty beer/pop cans, butter tubs, etc. I'd float them out into a pond or creek and blast away at them. It was a hell of a lot of fun.

Are the blue targets NATO blue?

I remember watching something on the history channel or was it the Discovery channel? about police snipers. There is a dept out in CA that has a 4wd remote control monster truck they tie two baloons too. One is the hostage and the other is the bad guy. They drive it around and the balloons dance around each other. The goal is to take out the bad guy balloon with out hitting the hostage balloon.

One of the last times I went up to the mtns my friend had a bust of
Lincoln that he shot... It was the funniest thing I had ever seen. The things just turned to powder.

I like taking clays and setting them up on the enbankment, 15-20 at a time, and then seeing how fast I can shoot them with out missing.

I discovered a new one last week. I started shooting at an old Bowling ball I found at the salvation army for $5. That thing took one HECK of a beating. I fired 7.62x54 rounds (at least 20), 7.62x39 rounds, 223 rounds, 45-70 rounds, etc at that thing for about an hour and I was left with a black chewed up piece of plastic. Did you know that there is a REALLY hard piece of rubber (ball shaped) in the center of a bowling ball? I had no idea. Fun though.

Maybe I missed it, but I'm surprised no one has mentioned shaving cream. You can get cans of the cheap stuff from Wal-Mart for about 80 cents. Whether you toss them in the air for the 12 gauge (check the wind first), or pick them off with some 223, they're always a hoot.:) I also like to pick up a few 12-packs of "Mountain Lightning" or "Dr Thunder".

Hello all,

Here are some of mine. I use bailing wire, skewers, putty ,hot glue, Duct tape, and mono fishing line.

*Tannerite:o expensive though.
*Potatoes and a pack of bamboo BBQ skewers. Allows target to be elevated off of the ground ,can be set at any distance.
*Eggs with fishing mono & hot-glue can be hung anywhere.
*Necco wafers and some putty for adhesive stand on edge, stick to any item etc. aim small hit small
*Marshmallows lots of fun they absorb a lot of hits .22
*Balloons great when helium filled and anchored in bundles at 300yds, choose a color in the group (bad guy) they are in constant movement with the breeze.
*Lawn Mower blade set upright with edge facing you, placed between two additional targets with 22lr shoot at edge split bullet, hit the two additional targets. I set a blade into a coffee can 1/2 filled with concrete easy to move to any distance. I also modified the blade I grounded both sides of the edge evenly
*Lids from frozen juice cans, attached to skeewers or mono line.
*I also take plumbers candles set them in a up-righted box (breeze protection) and attempt to snuff the flame.

As a family we enjoy shooting these things, lots of healthy competition:)

Peace,

Well, I don't have any fancy moving pictures, but on my 1881 Ranch we built a "cowboy town" and populated it with T-1 plate steel targets.

Orion's hanging out down by the corral. Over his left shoulder you can see several targets.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c327/OldJudgeCreek/DCMG06253.jpg

Slim's hanging out down by the Dust Cutter Saloon. Several bad guys can be seen skulkin' around in the alley behind the saloon.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c327/OldJudgeCreek/Nylon76078a.jpg

Do ya'll sponsor any Cowboy Action events out there? If not, ya oughtta! ;)

Old Judge Creek
06-08-2006, 11:49
Yeah, it is..... GREAT FUN.

Naaa... we don't "sponsor" jack.

Actually, I spent a lotta years is CAS, started 2 clubs and served in every club officer position they have. The bottom line was I really wanted "my very own town" and the ability to set up shoots with a few carefully selected Pards, without the BS from those who simply gotta win at all costs. We keep the group of invitees small. BTW: The two who've come the furthest for a week of cowboying and exploring the high Nevada desert came from Tidewater, Virginia and Edmonton, Alberta. Folks do come a long way to play.

So yup, the 1881 Ranch has regular cowboy shoots, by invitation only. We have great fun and don't charge anyone a red cent.

18 U.S.C. Chapter 40 and 27 CFR Part 55
Introduction
The following Questions and Answers are intended to aid you in gaining a better understanding of:
18 U.S.C. Chapter 40 – Importation, Manufacture, Distribution and Storage of Explosive Materials
and the implementing regulations issued within:
27 CFR Part 55 – Commerce in Explosives
This listing is not all-inclusive. However, it contains some of the most frequently asked questions that ATF receives. These questions and answers are only intended as a general overview.
To determine how the law and regulations apply to your specific circumstances, you must refer directly to the applicable law and regulation or contact your local ATF office. Please also be aware that the law and regulations are subject to change. For the most up-to-date information, please contact your nearest ATF office.
Unless otherwise stated, these Questions and Answers apply only to Federal law and regulations.
The States and their local jurisdictions have, in many cases, enacted their own requirements relating to explosives. Check with the appropriate State or local authorities for information regarding State or local law. Compliance with Federal law and regulations does not exempt persons from compliance with State and local requirements.
A Table of Contents and a Subject Index have been included for your convenience. The Index is located at the end of the Questions and Answers.

18. Are binary explosives subject to regulation under Federal explosives laws?
Until the compounds are mixed, they are not classified as explosives and, therefore, are not subject to control. However, once mixed, binary explosives are considered to be “explosive materials” and are subject to all applicable Federal requirements. A person who regularly combines compounds of binary explosives to manufacture such explosives for the purpose of sale or distribution or for the person’s own business use is a “manufacturer” of explosives materials and must be licensed as a manufacturer under the law. [18 U.S.C. 841(h); 27 CFR 55.11: definition of “manufacturer”]

36. When is a manufacturer's license required?
A manufacturer’s license is needed only by persons engaged in the business of manufacturing explosive materials for sale, distribution, or for business use. For example, persons engaged in the business of providing a blasting service using explosives of their own manufacture would be required to have a manufacturer’s license. Persons who manufacture explosives for their personal, nonbusiness use would not need a manufacturer’s license. [27 CFR 55.11: definition of “manufacturer”, 55.41]

40. Is a manufacturer’s license required for agricultural use of binary explosives?
No, as long as the user is not engaged in the business of manufacturing explosive materials. For example, if a farmer buys binary explosives for use in blowing tree stumps on his farm, he or she does not need a manufacturer’s license. However, if the farmer uses binary explosives in a business of blasting stumps/rocks, etc., for other persons, he or she would be required to have a manufacturer’s license. See also Questions 18, 36 and 37. [27 CFR 55.11: Definition of “manufacturer”, 55.41(a)]

My ex had a collection of them 12" Elvis dolls. Those made for some fun shooting. I set them up at 25 and 50 yards. My 9 year old was making heads shots at both distances with his .22. No they don't last very long but what fun.
It was great practice for the kids before squirrel season opened. My personal favorite was when I was stationed in Germany. We were on the .50 cal range and a group of big ass boar hogs crossed the range at about 600 yards. Needless to say with 4 Ma dueces, there wasn't anything left to clean up. :D

You must follow all the below rules or else you will be in violation of the law.

Rules:
1. The two parts must be stored and transported separately (in different containers).

2. Once you mix them together you must use them immediately. You cannot mix them together and then drive to the shoot site or store them. This is why its legal to use this mixture. When the two parts are stored and transported separately it is legal. However once you mix them together it is an explosive and must be used on site.

3. Use of the explosive must not harm any one or any thing(except for targets at the shoot site) or be used in any way that is unlawful.

Potatoes, they exploded like dynomite was in them even when shot with a .22. Super cheap 10 lbs for $2, what you don't use you can eat. They don't litter bio degradable and doesn't atract bee's and wasps like soda cans or melons. Only drawback is the can be hard to see lying on the ground, they're camoflaged.

The little propane cans work great with a flare sitting next to it, of course the flare is lit up and then when the round hits the propane can, makes a nice boom with the can flying in the air like a top!! :)

I've got some Tannarite I've yet to use, wanted to at a friends property, but he was afraid I'd set the area on fire. So I'll save it for my camping trip next year to the desert, sand won't burn, hehe.

Up at the property, where I got a 250yd range, I took and tied wire rope and then hung some jack-chain down from it with the lag type eye bolts. All ya got to do it go find a round of wood, which is fairly common up there, and screw the eye bolt in the end and presto, it's mulching time!
It gives a good swing, splinters pretty good when hit with 240gr out of the 44's and is biodegradable. Also is easily replaced when gone! If you need a little brighter, spray paint works good.
Have a small frame with two chains at 50yds and the cable is down at 200 with 8 chains hanging.
Also had a guy that used to come up and shoot before he moved out of the area that worked at a saw mill and brought up a stack of about 100 24" blades that are also used. They sound pretty good when hit with the 17's and 22's and most of the hanguns. The bigger stuff just pokes holes.

My shooting buddies & I have had a hoot with a R/C 4WD toy truck my son had outgrown. We get a helium balloon party kit from Wal-mart. It's cheap & provides plenty of different color balloons. Attach three different colors to the truck & hand your buddy the remote. He gets to pick the target color & drive (wildly) anywhere on the range. The object is to pop the selected color without popping the other two. It's moving everwhere in all directions at different speeds & he's TRYING to make you miss OR SHOOT the WRONG balloon! Then you get to drive & HE gets to shoot. Any pistol or rifle can play. There's plenty of friendly trash-talking & no one has shot the truck (yet). It's a great gun-game with non-target colors representing hostages, team members or by-standers. The mistakes make you realize how uncertain the reality of a gunfight actually is & how fast you can foul-up. The hits require brains, timing, strategy & quick decisions. The combination makes you a much better practical shooter. And, if a new member of your shooting circle is a bullseye ace, with this "different" gun-game you can pop his ego in a hurry. Try it boys...this is TOUGH!
