i'm looking to put a scope on my springfield sar 8, (H&K 91 clone). i've got 30 mm ARMS throw lever rings. i like the sound of the shepherds quick ranging system, does anyone own one? do they work as advertised? are they rugged\durable? i also like the ATN with it's lighted reticle. anyone own one? is it legal for hunting if the batteries are out? mostly it's a sniper\defensive investment, but it would be nice to be able to hunt with it as well. i want a quality durable scope without spending $1000.00 or more. appreciate the input!

I've had the pleasure of using shepard scopes before(don't currently own one, though). They work as advertised, and are approved for .50BMG recoil. The zeroing and BDC work as advertised. Just make sure you get the correct reticle/BDC for the cartridge/barrel length you are using(i.e.-p1,p2,p3,v1,v2,v3, etc.)
A call to shepard or a perusal of their website will explain it all.

I have a Shepherd on the 308 VLS. Does what it says. I've had it out to 800 yards. As mentioned, be sure to get the one for what you're shooting. I suggest calling them and dicussing what caliber, type and grain of shell you plan on shooting. One scope will cover different setups.

My son-in-law has a Shepherd 2.5-7 AO that he had mounted on a heavy barrel .308 and then he moved the scope over to his .233 Howa. It worked great on both rifles. It got rather boring watching him blow up the 12oz or so plastic water bottles at 200 yards. He took the Shepherd off the .223 & mounted a higher magnification scope because the bottles were getting hard to see at 300 & 400 yards with that scope. It has lots of ring marks on it from when a previous owner didn't tighten down the rings & the scope slipped quite a bit. He has it for sale now.
