Here is my CMP Service Grade which I got from the Program in 1999:

I bought it without wood, and it's lived in some italian wood that I practiced refinishing as well as in some fancy Fajen camo laminate:

Same gun in some surplus Italian wood, bleached with oven cleaner and restained: http://www.perfectunion.com/images/armory/garand/cmp/99_svc/with_surplus_italian_wod/aut_2327.jpg

I also scored a real T37 for it, this thing rocks! This is what I keep on it at the range, I get asked all sorts of questions about it!

Awesome rifle Bill. That's one hell of a flash hider on there, it looks like a tuning fork or something. What's the storey on that ?

Very nice. I am a fan of the more traditional wood, but, that laminate kicks butt!

Here is my 1995 DCM issued SA M1. I am planning a light stock cleaning and reapplying blo in the near future.

How does your's shoot?

The first flash hiders used on the Garand were a cone shape, designed only to hide the flash from the shooter, not the enemy. Later when they applied the benefits of slotted flashhiders, they designed this, the T37.

The funny thing is that I bought it new in wrap, it was made under USGI contract in 1970 (!!!!).

Yes, you got it right. Long after the M14 had supplanted the Garand as the semi-auto sniper weapon of choice by the US Armed Forces, the government was still buying some quantity of T37 flashhiders every year.

Nice rifle!

Mine shoots pretty good, better than me actually (grin). I was shooting about 1.75" and under with open sites quite a few years ago with milsurp ammo, but I haven't tried to group it in a few years.

(edit later)

That's 1.75" at 100 yards (grin).

Oh, I forgot to add: It rings like a tuning fork!

Every time you fire or slam the bolt home, you get a faint ring out of it.

That's a horrible picture. It actually is much darker now, fits better with the rifle.

Problem with it is that I can't fit my bayonet on the rifle any more :(

Maybe I'll take the T37 off it if I need to go pig hunting, never know when you'll need to make a bayonet charge! (grin)

Bill-
Something tells me a smart poke w/ that flash hider(extremely cool, btw!), would hurt just as much!! Might be a little more diff. to pull out, however!! Sportsmans guide has them for sale from time to time.

The reproductions are notoriously bad, although occasionally someone makes a good one.

They say that most of the reproductions don't ring when you cycle the action, I wouldn't know, I have the real thing ;)
