Thoughts? What is the going rate for one? The one I am looking at takes AK mags and has the pistol grip/buttstock.
heard they shoot worse than an AK.
and with that much money one might as well just buy a Romanian wasr-1.

You would be looking for a SKS M; the paratrooper is the same as the regular SKS, but with a shorter barrel. I love em. The last time I saw one for sale, it was $300. Honestly, there was a guy at the range with me this past saturday who had one. He told me it had taken a buck this deer season. Seriously, if you can hunt with a rifle, what more do you need out of it? That is unless you are a competition shooter.

A good friend of mine has one and it seems to shoot just as good as any other sks. I like the gun myself. I'm just not to wild about the thumbhole stock. The stock looks kinda generic but I think it could be improved greatly with a little sandpaper, a darker walnut stain and a nice tung oil finish.I would buy one of these before an AK solely because of the saftey setup on the AK. Last time I looked, maybe a year ago, they were going for around 300$

 I saw one of these two weeks ago at a gunshow in the portland area, the price was about 290$ if I recall correctly.I was wondering about the accuracy myself?I also noticed the lack of the stripper clip option cut into the bolt-but I guess with all of the magazines available it is not a real problem. Also will the para take the sks upper receiver cover made with a weaver rail for a scope?I had one on a chinese (norinco)sks for awhile and wondered if the machining was close enough to fit the yugo-para model? :sniper:

I have one. Well I think I do as is explained above. Its an SKS that takes AK-47 mags. Its a Norinco and registered as an ASW in Ca. It shoots great. Probably better than my other SKS's and definately better than my Norinco AK I got at teh same time (also registered). Nice that they both take take the same cheap, dependable magazines:)
If I could buy another I would grab it for the prices you guys are talking about.

Just paid $300 out the door(private sale) for an "M" new unfired. The other 2 at the show were over $400. They have went up. I have a regular paratrooper also, has the military type stock, bayonet and its new unfired also. I bought it about 10 years ago new and never shot yet. Think I paid about $140 for it. Also do not buy "Navy Arms" paras or any other for that matter. The company in Chi8na that made the Navy Arms guns did inferior work ...barrels will blow up....it will go full auto on you and a myriad of other problems.

The "full auto" thing is called a slamfire; any SKS is as likely to do this as another. It is usually a result of a stuck firing pin that got gunked up. As far as barrels blowing up, that's a new one on me (and probably most of the other SKS guys)

Well they had a hell of a recall on all Navy Arms SKSs. Naturally not all were turned in. Very inferior work and Ive never had an SKS slam fire on me and Ive owned them since they first came in the country. The barrels will split on you or just flat blow out...just a very bad gun from where everything usually works fine. I mean if blowing up in your face is ok then so be it....not for me. Navy Arms are junk guns...buy at your risk. FireArms ID had the warning on there site. One of many.

So, Navy arms was rebarreling SKS's? News to me. I have never had a slam fire in any of my SKS's, either, but I hear about them all the time online. I suppose it is from people who don't keep theirs clean

They didnt rebarrel...the barrels put on the gun were inferior by the company that supplied Navy Arms imports. Do a search or go to firearms ID, the warning is there also and has been for years. I thought everyone knew to stay away from any Navy Arms SKSs.
