Came upon a Ruger for sale that's still in storage. Have not seen it. Here's all I have. It's 15 plus years old new in box never fired, Barrell says Strum Ruger, bolt action, 30.06, 18 inch barrell, brushed stainless steel with rifle sights. That's all the owner remembers. Does anyone know what it might be and it's worth. The owner thinks he paid around $400.00 for it back in the day.

If its a Ruger bolt action, I guess it would have to be a M77? What are you looking for? The model? More infor about it or what?

If it is a M77 what do you think it is worth? He said he'd sell it to me. I will try and get more info, but it won't be soon. It's in storage and the owner said that he will look for it in a couple of days.

You can get a new M77 for 500 or under, so if its 15 years old, I would shoot for 300-350 if its like new. That's just what I would do, your price may vary. Being that old isn't a bad thing either. It should have the tang safety instead of that ridiculous 3-pisition safety.

Assuming the information you were given is correct, the M77 would have to be an old model (the newer 77 MkII was introduced in 1989 or 1991 - sources differ), with the tang safety. There was an old model 77 with an 18.5 inch barrel, the 77RLS (introduced in 1987), and another with the Mannlicher-type full-length stock, the 77RSI (in 1986). However, I can't find any reference to a M77 with a stainless steel barrel that dates back 15 years. If the rifle you described has a synthetic stock, it may be a MkII. Quickest way to tell is look at the safety. The MkI has a tang safety (behind and below the bolt), like a double-barrel shotgun. The MkII has its safety mounted on the bolt, much like a Winchester M70. Upshot is, there's no good answer to your question about pricing as the different models vary widely in value. Once we get the model pinned down, condition will determine whether $400 is a good, bad or indifferent price to pay for this rifle.

Thank you all for your responses. The owner said he will pull it out of the mothball fleet and tell me exactly what it is. Until then, I realize it's difficult to appraise. I'll get all the info. from him tomorrow and post whatever I get. Then perhaps a price can be established.
Again thanks.......

TPW,

What did you find out about the Ruger? I tried to do some research but I too couldn't find anything about a stainless model that dates to the period you originally indicated.

What's the news?
