Texas pastor electrocuted during baptism
Accident occurred when 33-year-old reached for a microphone

WACO, Texas - A pastor performing a baptism was electrocuted inside his church Sunday morning after adjusting a nearby microphone while standing in water, a church employee said.

The Rev. Kyle Lake, 33, was stepping into the baptistery as he reached out for the microphone, which produced an electric shock, said University Baptist Church community pastor Ben Dudley.

Water in a baptistery usually reaches above the waist, said Byron Weathersbee, interim university chaplain at Baylor University.

Lake was pronounced dead at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, nursing supervisor Pat Mahl said. The woman being baptized apparently had not stepped into the water and was not seriously injured.

Pastors at University Baptist Church routinely use a microphone during baptisms, said Jamie Dudley, the wife of Ben Dudley and a business administrator at the church.

“He was grabbing the microphone so everyone could hear,” she said. “It’s the only way you can be loud enough.”

About 800 people attended the morning service, which was larger than normal because it was homecoming weekend at nearby Baylor University, Dudley said.

Lake had been at the church for nine years, the last seven as pastor. He had a wife, Jennifer, a 5-year-old daughter and two 3-year-old sons.

At a remembrance attended by about 1,000 people Sunday night at First Baptist Church, Ben Dudley told the UBC congregation that they would move forward as a church.

“I don’t know how, when, why, where or what’s going to happen, but we will continue as a church in the community because that is what Kyle would have wanted,” he said.

I saw that. I sure hope he was right about the whole "outward sign of an inward grace" thing. <_< It is interesting that the ladie that was in there with him didnt get hurt at all.

I read those articles early this morning and then decided I had better mull it over a bit before responding if at all thinking maybe I was being an oversensitive ol' fogey. Well, I've thought it over, shared it with my wife for her opinion to balance me out and now I've got to reply.

That "spoof" article is in extremely bad taste, is highly insensitive, callously written and under the circumstances highly inappropriate. I hope that no family member or congregational member of the unfortunate pastor ever has the misfortune to read it and suffer more pain.

My two cents..........

I daresay that we'd all laugh and sneer at a spoof article about the gun packing granny of TX who shot a home intruder and then sent him a bill while he was in prison for the cost of the ammunition used in the shooting. Same deal here. Someone did something stupid and got killed as a result of it. You usually get laughed at for that kind of stuff.

Not the same deal at all...... a pastor performing the sacrament of baptism is not committing a felony. He might have done something "stupid" and died as a result, but that is more comparable to someone stepping absent-mindedly off a curb and getting killed by a bus. (And that could be your elderly mother or father.) Not something you make fun of.

Yeah, I'll laugh right along with you about granny popping the intruder. He was breaking the law and had it coming. How would you feel about a derogatory spoof concerning a soldier running out into enemy fire to save a child ? After all, he would be doing something "stupid" by exposing himself to extreme risk.

It's apples and oranges and they don't compare. There are some lines of respect and decency that shouldn't be crossed. The writer of that article crossed the line.

I still say it's funny. That preacher has been nominated for a Darwin Award on two dozen occassions but this was rejected becasue the incident was so damn boring.......

Common sense says electricity and water don't mix. The Spoof website is down so I can't read it, but you have to admit there is some irony in the humor of the fact that he had just finished a sermon ending in "Surprise me, God" and then electrocuted himself during a baptism minutes later..

I'm sure his soul is in a better place anyway, I'm pretty sure they don't keep people out of the afterlife for not realizing that voltage + conductor (water) == bad things. ;)

The exact same thing happened in the old Testament with Uzzah. If you look at the way the Ark of The Covenant was constucted, it is clear that it was an electrical condensor of sorts. Being made of achaicah wood (an excellent insulator) and over laid with gold (an excellent conductor), and being instructed to carry it with staves, and no other way.

If we look at what happened when Moses approached the "burning bush" that did not burn, but was on fire, we can be reminded of "St. Elmos Fire". This phenonmenon was visible on ships at sea when the mast began to glow. This was electricity charged particles bleeding off the mast, and was seen as a sign of good fortune, probably because they knew that lightening wouldnt strike them during this time. Knowing the above to be true, it is easy to assertain that in the prescence of God, there is electricity when we read the burning bush story. I maintain that this is why when we feel the Holy Spirit, we sometimes get goosbumps, and the hair on our arms stands up, just as if we were about to be struck by lightening.

Knowing that in the prescence of God there is electricity, and eletrically charged particles in the air, and knowing that the Ark was constructed in a manner that would store electricity, it is clear why God instructed it to be carried in a certain fashion, is it not?

Well, David didnt do that. He had the Ark placed on an ox cart, and while traveling down a rocky road, Uzzah put his hand on it to steady it and keep it from falling and was struck dead. I believe he was electricuted. Plain and simple.

Our heavenly Father created electricity, and He knew that to loose respect for it would result in disaster and death. This fella should have used a wireless mic, maybe one with a head piece, and showed a little more respect for electricity. God's Divine Law's include the laws of nature, physics, gravity ect... Just as if we step off of a roof, no matter how right we are with God, the law of gravity kicks it. Same with electricity.

David didnt think it was funny when Uzzah was struck dead. I am sure Uzzah's family didnt think it was funny either. He wife was widowed, and his children left fatherless. The same is true with this preacher. A wife widowed, and children left fatherless. Im sure a night spent as a little mouse in thier house during this time of thier mourning would change a lot of tunes. I didnt see the spoof, after reading Doc's comments, I figured it would be offensive to the family. Im glad its down.

This should be a lesson to everyone. Never loose respect for electricity. Never!!

BTW Terry "Esau". That sure is a spooky name, isnt it?

Having been shocked once or twice, I can only say "Amen!" Let me tell ya, the feeling of electricity coursing through you is definitely not fun. And when I said there was humor in the irony, I spoke only of the circumstances, not of the misfortune. Certainly there is always humor to be found in ironic circumstances, though you can still feel badly for the family and loved ones of someone who suffers from something like this.
