Just go done building this up. fairly plain build but can wait to go shoot the crap out of inanimate objescts.
Build:
16" Heavy Barrel with CAR length handguard and A2 flash hinder (i think)
Mega lower and a3 flat top Upper and Standard Parts kit provided by Erik at Bang Arms (gotta keep it local)
M4 6 pos stock
used milspec detatchable carry handle
and 1 GI mag (am now poor so more will have to wait).

Simple, but with chew threw ammo just the same. Thought it would be a little more difficult than it was to build up. Can't wait to build one up for my wife. Eric @ bang arms is gonna help me out and get me a pink upper and lower for her. It will be her little "evil Pink rifle".

Its made by Mega Machine Shop from Tumwater WA, just up north of here. Good quality and fairly inexpensive, and i like the logo on the side.

Nice rifle. I have a Bushmaster that looked just like that when it was stock.

Being that this is my first AR, I took it out to break in the barrel today up at a local Quarry. I was only able to get about 15 rounds down range before the monsoon hit, but lemme tell you. HOLEE CRAP. That thing is amazing. It was so dead on it was unreal. I have had a mini 14 for the last 4 years, and just recently started accurizing it. And even after what i did to my mini, the ar blew it away. Granted it was only 15rnds, with a cleaning after the first 5, but i was amazed. Can't wait to get one built up for my wife. Now I just need to figure out how to get more ammo :D

Now you understand what AR owners say about the Mini. I wish Ruger would update the Mini-14 to increase its precision potential. If you equip your AR-15 with a free float tube and crown the muzzle you will increase the accuracy even more.

Below is an example target shot by gun writer Jeff Quinn @ 100 yds with a Bushmaster Varminter AR-15. I defy any Mini out there to achieve comparable results. More target results can be found here.

Not to sound like an ass, but a mini can be made to shoot well-very well that is. The penny and the shell were hit at 108 yds, off a sandbag. I punched poor old "honest Abe" twice. I will agree, an out-of-the-box AR will generally outshoot a mini, out-of-the-box, but with some minor gunsmithing and tailored handloads, a mini can perform. If I ever need to work for Uncle Sam again, in my prev. job title, I will forsake all other rifles, and insist that I take my mini.

I definitely see the appeal of the AR over the mini, but I still have a soft spot for my mini. Eventually I would like to throw a heavy barrel on it or something. I like how reliable it is and how it eats any kinda ammo you feed it. But one of my main bitches with the Mini is the ruger stance on mags and the fact that you have to pay 30ish for a good hi cap mag. Oh well tis better to have both guns than just one, eh? Gonna head back out the quarry to shoot some more this afternoon and continue the break in process on the AR, and adjust the new sights on the mini. Made a new reactive target with some scrap steel and a stick welder last night so gonna have to go ring it a few times. I'll post pics later.

Thanks
heres a pic of what my father-in-law and I did out at the qaurry today. This was out somewhere between 150-200yds all shots were open sight. A most were out of the AR, but a couple were from my mini, and i rang it a few times with my wife's beretta CX4. i also landed about 4 hits with some CB longs out of the 10/22. I came pretty close with my wife's 380 beretta 85fs pistol not too bad. All said this sucker cost me 10 bucks plus about 15 welding sticks and about 1.5 hrs of work. Cant wait to take it out next saturday and use up the rest of my 223. Good times.

I hear you, it's just that I wish that those accurate minis didn't have to come handbuilt from a good gunsmith. I wish that someone would begin manufacturing a 'better mousetrap' Mini-14/30 rifle to put the fire under Ruger's feet and make them improve their product a bit because, you're right, the Mini does have the potential to be a very good gun.

You're absolutely right. If I were in charge at Ruger, not only would I be ashamed of the mini's performance, accuracy-wise, but I would also be mad as hell about the market share being lost to gun buyers looking for an affordable, accurate, autoloading rifle of current mil. caliber. Ruger, in my opinion, really missed the ball on this one. I'm not saying that a bone stock mini should be able to compete in the heavy-varmint class benchrest matches, but the overall repeatable accuracy isn't good, esp. from stock rifle to stock rifle. There is a def. variance.
Even w/ all the diff. manufacturers of AR-type rifles, most conform to a basic spec., and the result is not-too-shabby performance, even from the lower-priced AR's out there. I've seen low-cost, cast upper/lower rifles shoot pretty well.

Now, if only someone from ruger was listening............................

was that really at 100 yrds? What mods do you have done to turn 25 yrd results into 100 yrd results w/o a bull barrell? Very impressive.
