View Full Version : Mini 30 20 rd mags.
Any recommendations for a good 20 round mag for the Mini 30? I have Triple K 10 rounders taht are fine but prefer Promag or Masens.
so far the USA 20 worked well for me. Pormag 10 still have first/second round chamber problem occationally, still need to break-in.
Don't know about the USA mini-14 mags, but USA mini-30 mags are actually pretty good. Of course, can't compare with the Thermold ones.
USA 30rd's material is thicker and more robust. a little too long though.
used to have a bounch of western metal mags (came with the gun), already got rid of them. they can be modded to work but that will be too much tinkering and the end result is not perfect, might as well just buy the USA's.
I can't believe that no one's making a decent high cap mag for the mini-30, the AWB has been dead for over a year.
I've got to agree that the USA's are the best high cap available and they really aren't that great. Sometimes they may need a little minor fitting but they're a lot better than any of the other metal mags.
One thing I wonder about though, does anybody actually have any experience with the thermolds? Everyone repeats that they're supposed to be the best but I don't see many reports from people that actually own them.
I got one a couple of years ago and it jams constantly. Maybe I just got a lemon, but at the prices they go for I'm not planning on buying any more.
the 28/45rd thermold is actually for 28-30rd only. if you load it to 45, the the first 15 or so will go smoothly, then it tend to jam. If you collapse the extension and use it only as 28rd mag it works great.
But I still like the extension, I can extended it and load 28 rounds (while the max cap is 45) and the spring won't be compressed much. good for long term storage with emergency ammo in it. When you need to use it, just compress the extension into the body and you get 28rds ready to go, fully reliable.
Adnexed, you might try taking out a few coils of the spring. The spring is too strong for the mag when collapsed. I left a mag loaded in collapsed mode, and a few days later, there were rounds that had popped out of mag.
I replaced the springs in mine with Wolff AK-47 springs. These springs appear to give better feed than original. Even tension with mag loaded full or just a few rounds in it. I chopped one Wolff spring and left others as is. Will see if a full size spring is too much for 28 round mode.
Might have to try an AK spring, I've got plenty of em laying around. It might be an issue with the feed lips too, it only seems to jam when feeding from the right side. That might be pretty tough to fix on a plastic mag. Anyway, I've got 10 USA 30's and 2 USA 50's that work just fine, so I think I've got the hi-caps covered :D
What I'd really like to see is some new high quality mini-30 mags being made. Ruger has no plans to make any and probably wouldn't want civilians to have them anyway and so far none of the aftermarket seem to be interested in them either.
