View Full Version : holes
Maybe this is not the right spot for this but most of my weapons have the stud screw for the sling. Both in the forearm and the butt of the stock. As I only shoot off the bench I usually remove them. My question is - how to fill the hole either with a flat surfaced good looking screw or to fill the hole with something that matches the stock...any suggestions????

You should be able to find a machines screw at the hardware store that will fit it. The thread patterns are different so you may have to get a little larger size than the hole for a tight fit, but they have a flat head on the and should fit in to the hole nicely. Myself, on the other hand, can't ever get enough sling studs! I have bipods that use the studs, and slings on most every gun, so I am always looking for those dang things! Hope the machine screws work for ya.
You can drill them slightly oversized and match a wooden dowel to them. Cut the dowel piece a little longer than the hole and cut a "swirl" like a candy cane around the dowel with a razor knife. Use a little glue and pres the dowel in while twisting (the swirl will let the excess glue come out). Clean the glue off, and use a sharp chisel to cut the dowel flush with the stock when the glue is dried. Since you now have a dowel endgrain showing, it will suck up whatever stain and finish you want to use to match or contrast the stock. Use small brushes or Q-tips and you'll keep the rest of the stock nice. Good luck!

I assumed you were dealing with a synthetic stock, so if not forgive me. Good tip 'Doc. I have a .22 rifle I have been thinking about filling the holes on. Might try your dowel rod trick. B)

Coyote-
You know, I did just the thing you're talking about, removing the sling swivel studs to get a nice, smooth stock w/ no protuberances. Only prob was, when shooting from the standing or prone unsupported pos's, I really missed having a sling. For a bench-only rifle, by all means. I just wanted to run that by you, because when I went to redrill the holes again, I drilled them off center, and I curse my self every time I see it!!!!
