Can the Mini-14 barrel survive 100 rapid-fired, continous rounds? I think a heavy barrel replacement is going to be strongly recommended for this accessory. Does anyone know how well the standard-barrel M-16 holds-up? No matter what the answers are, this is must-have accessory for any SHTF rifle, so I'll be buying a several, even at a cost of $250+ each.

The M-16 holds up just fine to a Beta dump, but I don't the Mini/AC556 will hold up that well. When the feed towers are released I'll buy one, but I doubt I'll be doing many mag dumps.

The Beta is a poor choice for a so calles SHTF situation. In that situation I'd much prefer 4-6 factory 20's.

I disagree, Treedawg. With the Beta mag, you won't need to carry multiple mags in pouches. You have 100 rounds on the gun in a corrosion-proof, semi-sealed, locked-and-loaded container. If the Beta mag is highly thought of by soldiers on the battlefield, I'm sure it will perform well during the chaos generated by natural disasters and looters.

Nevertheless, I agree that a factory mag or two should still be carried with the Beta mag, as they have been known to jab with dire consequences. Here are some fairly balanced reviews on the Beta mag:

Beta C Mags -- 100 Shot Firepower (http://savvysurvivor.com/beta_c_mags.htm)
AR-15 Beta Product Review (http://www.ar15.com/content/products/magazines/beta-c.html)

OK, I have 1 plastic Beta with 100 rounds and I drop it, the spring fails, the feed tower cracks etc and I'm SOL.

I have 6 factory 20's holding 120 rounds total. If 1 mag gets crushed or has spring failure etc. I remove the ammo from that mag and I still have 5 good mags to pick from.

The Beta has recieved constant poor reviews in military trials since it's introduction.

I do have a Beta for my M-16 and I love it, but I still think 30 round USGI mags are far superior in a SHTF situation.

If the military thinks so little of the C-Mag, then why is it still being used? Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, of course. I think the reviews I've posted above do a good job of pointing out the strengths and weaknesses of the C-Mag and the importance of using graphite over other lubricants to maintain reliability.

I' happy to learn that you've had good results with your C-Mag. As my rifles are the Ruger Mini-14 and the DS Arms SA58 FAL, I haven't had the opportunity to own one of these magazines.

Tell us truly. If you had to face a dozen armed looters with only your M-16, which would you rather have loaded: your 100-round C-Beta or your 30-rd mag?

Truth is I'd much prefer standard 30 round mags if faced armed looters. If one mag fails you throw it down and charge a fresh mag. If the Beta has a problem you are SOL.

OTOH if I'm out blasting with friends at the range hand me the Beta and watch me play :D

So why couldn't you "throw down" your Beta and "charge a fresh mag"?

By the way, you probably don't want to "throw down" any mag because you may need it later. A pouch, pocket, or drop bag is a better place to put it and won't result in damaged feed-lips.

Looks pretty ugly IMHO. MWG builds nicer 90-rounders. Check this out:

I agree with treedawg. I'd rather have five or 6 factory 20's. Reason being that I have never once had one of them jam so I would presume that would not jam in a shtf situation. I f the beta screws up, it may not be just as simple as dropping it and putting in a 20. I may have to unjam my weapon and in the mean time get my ass waxed. No sir, I stick with tried and true.

Too bulky and heavy for rapid-fire, multiple-target acquisition.

If you had to face a dozen armed looters with only your M-16,
which would you rather have loaded: your 100-round C-Beta or your 30-rd mag?
If facing a dozen armed looters, one 30-rounder should do the trick: two shots
per looter, plus a few extra for the ones that are still moving when it's over... :D

If the military thinks so little of the C-Mag, then why is it still being used?
Don't base your choice of firearms and accessories solely on what the military does. The military doesn't always make the smartest decisions. In fact, they've been known to make some pretty damn stupid ones based on many other reasons (i.e., financial and political) than combat effectiveness.

I just found these articles recounting tests of the Beta C Mag. I have cancelled my plans to buy this magazine because of its poor performance

It's OK to drop a magazine to the ground, just don't toss away from you. It's faster than fumbling with a pocket or pouch. Time is precious in a SHTF moment. A well built magazine should survive a short fall. The most important thing is to keep your rounds flying down-range.

Don't let me attitude or the reviews keep you from purchasing a Beta.

They really are alot of fun at the range.

From the Defend America report:

According to the Ultimate Weapons Systems web site the “C-MAG is built to the highest international military production standards and meets or exceeds all NATO MILSPEC tests,” and was “successfully tested in combat during (Operation) Desert Storm where it performed flawlessly under the most rigorous conditions.

That's funny, I never heard of these things when I was there. Besides, if they were "successfully tested in combat" fifteen years ago, why are they testing them all over again now?

Plinky,

I have some reservations about that MWG 90 round mag. From the way they talk about their product, they do NOT recommend that you use it for anything but plinking at the range. lawyer talk, yeah, but still..........
from their site"Always avoid lethal situations whenever possible. High capacity magazines such as the 90 Rounder for the Mini 14 are intended to eliminate re-loading downtime for persons in unavoidable potentially lethal situations, but no product can fully protect the user from injury or death in a firefight. The knowing use of MWG products, when a potentially lethal situation could be avoided, will constitute an assumption of the known risks of engaging in a lethal situation."

I assume this is the standard M-16 Beta with a Mini feed tower.

If that's correct I'd like a price on a feed tower as I already have a Beta for my M-16.
