...so I'm not up to speed on the current mag situation. Is Ruger planning to start making hi cap mags again now that the ban has expired, or are they still too PC for that?
Darth Ruger. Only you would be so bold.
Ruger is not going to make 30s. Partly because they are too PC and partly because their factory 30-rd magazines will not function properly with the factory synthetic stock; the rifle jams on the 21st round according to Ruger and those who have attended Ruger's armorer's courses. The magazines function properly, however, with third-party synthetic stocks.

Well, like I said, I haven't kept up on the magazine situation.

I never heard about that. What makes a particular stock
cause the mag to jam on the 21st round?
They won't make 20 rounders, either?

I have never believed the story that the 30 rounders jam on synthetic stocks.
I will have to test out the theory. I have a Mini-14 with a Ruger synthetic stock and 7 factory Ruger 30 round mags. (Hard to find time to go to the range these days.)
It seems funny to me that they supposedly jam on the 21st round. Gee...not the 22nd or 23rd or 24th?
I think Ruger is lying and is just being PC. You know, doing what they can to undermine the gun rights of the very people that put them where they are today.
Great guns. The company ethic is deplorable.
My approach is this. Buy the best gun for the job.
Also, keep the patriotic mag manufacturers in business. Buy more of the best high capacity mags than you think you are going to need. Then double that. Then keep buying. ;) :ar15:
I have 5 factory 30's and 2 mini's with synthetic stocks and have never had a problem with reliability with any mag in any rifle. Silly rumors.
I thought Ruger was talking about the synthetic stock for the 580 mini's? Those might be a little different

What's a 580 Mini?
So they're not going to start making 20-rounder's either?
Ruger is still making 20-rounders and you can buy them now at Cal's Sporting Armory (http://www.calssportingarmory.com/Ruger.htm).

I think Oswald2001 got it right! The notion of the 30 round mag jamming on the 21st round is a bunch of PC BS. It just happens to jam on the first round after the politically correct number of 20? Yea right! Again I call BS. I don't need a 30 round mag from ruger, there are still plenty of PMIs floating around for cheap and they function perfectly.

Is Cal's the only place you can get them?

Darth.... Here's another place to get the 20 rounders.

Thanks for the links, but I'm a little confused about something. If Ruger is still making them, shouldn't they be available everywhere? Any gun shop should be able to order them, right? Wouldn't you even be able to order them directly from Ruger yourself?

Darth.... It is my understanding that ruger will sell their 20 round magazine only to law enforcement officers/departments, government, or law enforcement dealers. The mags do eventually trickle out to the citizen but this policy tends to keep the prices high compared to other magazines.

Ah, I get it now. They're trying to straddle the PC fence to make both sides happy while pleasing neither.

You hit the nail right square on the head! I say to heck with ruger, I've tried the new production ProMag 20 round mags and they functioned fine in my gun. A lot of other members on this board have also had good luck with them. Awhile back you could get the ProMag 20 rounder from Natchez Shooters Supply (http://natchezss.com/category.cfm?contentID=productDetail&brand=ZM&category=18&prodID=ZMRUGA1&CFID=737450&CFTOKEN=92394837)
for $13.40. Their current price is $17.90, which is still pretty good in my opinion.

You might try Joe at Gun Goodies (http://gungoodies.com/) .
The last time I purchased ProMAg steel 20's from him, they were about $15. He is really fair on shipping, too. He doesn't have them listed on his website, so you have to email him using his website email link. Be sure to mention you are a member of the Perfect Union Mini-14 Forum, and he will give you a discount.
