I was wondering whether it is worth getting a bore sighting tool. So far when I've mounted a scope I try to eye it as best I can then go to the range and zero it. I don't have many scoped rifles so I was wondering is it worth the investment.

I have at least 2 gun shops that are more than willing to boresight a scope for free just to get you in the door and browsing while you wait. Yes I am a sucker, I usually pick something up.

Scopes that I have had boresighted I've been able to zero immidiately at 100 or 200 yrds.

When I eyeball them myself I always try at those ranges and end up bringing in a target to 10 or 15 yards to get rounds on paper and start adjustments.

I think boresighting is worth it. If I couldn't have it done for free I would probably go in on one as a group with the guys I shoot with. $10 each would easily cover one and we could float it back and forth as needed.

I bought a laser boresighter for 39 + tax and I think it is well worth the money but then again I have six scopes. This thing will get you real close (within a few inches) at 100 yds and then its easy to dial in from there. You can also use it to set your Iron sights and get them real close too. Nothing is ever going to replace a trip to the range.

Thanks guys, I have 5 scopes not all mounted but the rifle calibers are different. They vary from 22 to 308 can one laser do it all. I've also seen some of the boresighters don't work if the scope mount is high like on my PTR-91.

After years of whinning, I purchased the Leupold boresighter because it seems that I am always messing with scopes and such. It was $69 from Midway, I will keep with my hunting gear to make sure that once I establish a zero, I can always be sure that it is on. Once you get one you will never be sorry. The Leupold boresighter is not dependant on bore studs and will work with even with the AR and the front sight. Just make sure that you turn the battery off when done.

I totally agree with gossman - the Leupold bore-sighter - is one of the best. I have used it will all 5 of my scoped weapons - it will get you as close and any bore sighter - and I also was never sorry I purchased one....

I guess I'll be the odd man out, I use a mark-1 eyeball. To make it easier knock the primer out of a fired round and do your boresite through the primer hole (works like a peep site). Fire 1 round at 25 and rough in the correction. Fire 1 round at 100 and fine tune the settings. The only "special" tool I use is a small prisem (a mirror would work) when doing levers and semi's where I can't remove the bolt.

Sounds like the LazerLyte from WalMart. I just bought one and it worked great on my Redhawk 357 mag with a scope. I'm having trouble with my Mini because of the heighth of the fwd. mount I run out of adjustment. NOT GOOD Please see my post about "shiming". I neeed some help. Maybe you have done this before?

OH, it did appear that my peep sight (ranch model) is right on at 25 yds.

Thanks

Were you guys talking about the Luepold zero point boresighter? I've been considering getting one.

I don't know what the others got but this is similar (mine is red) to what I got at Wally World for $19.00 + change:
