View Full Version : AR mags in a Mini...easier thanks to Remington?

Has anyone looked at the Remington 7615P Police Rifle? It has what appears to be (to my untrained eye during a quick gunstore once-over) an add-on AR mag adapter. Granted, it isn't a drop-in, and the mag release notch would probably need to be recreated on each and every AR mag, but it's an intriguing possibility. If the part is available separately, we could have a good solution. Obviously this is a job for the fabricators of the board and would not be for everyone. My apologies if this is in the wrong place. I felt it could help address the mag issue...

Are you talking about using the adaptor to install on a Mini-14 to use AR mags?

Talk about a derailed train of thought on my part. Yes, that is my intent. My apologies.

Would be an interesting project.

The project has been attempted by several talented people, but I know of none that I would consider a success. You might be the one to make it work.

Was it attempted using that housing? I can see it would be a challenge, but we accepted that onus when we bought Minis ;)

PS If anyone finds an exploded drawing of the Remmy please pass it on. I'll start looking after the Captain Morgan wears off. heh

That would be an awsome feat. ;)

What, the Cap'n M wearing off? Might be easier to make the magwell mod ;)

No offense, but what would be the reasoning behind this mod? Factory Ruger mags can be had for under $30 these days and quality aftermarkets for $15.

5 20 round LEO = $150
5 USGI M-16 = $90

$60 savings doesn't seem to justify the effort. When factory mags were $100+ each it would have been a reasonable alternative to those financially challenged.

I believe I seen an adapter in the Cabela's fall catalog(2005) to convert a Rem. 700 to be able to accept mags. I'd definitely be interested in something like that for my KM77. As for the mini, out of about 20 mags I had to pitch one because it was crap. Everything else just needed to be tweeked. On the other hand my AR mags just seem to give me a headache.

You need to recheck your prices. You can buy 5 USGI 30's for for about $60.00 shipped if you shop around a little. That's a great savings in my book.

None taken. Having used M14s and M16A2s in public service I simply prefer (read: am more proficient with) the mags on 16s. Aside from the barrel being a drinking straw, the only flaw I found on my Ranch is the awkward (for me) mag change process. It's the only weapon I have that gives me fits when I go for speedy reloads. Since we'll be out of state in the coming year or two I'll probably wait and build an AR.

Another good thing about the M16 mags is there are millions of them to be bought. Prior to the end of the '94 mag ban you could still locate nice USGI 30's for about $15.00. At that time factory Ruger 30's were bringing over a $100.00ea. You could find them cheaper, but it was a lucky find when you did.

The local range does a CQB match once a month on either Saturday or Sunday... The first mag can only have 10 rounds in it, and each run is usually between 40 - 60 rounds total...

I have never seen a Mini- compete, but there IS an AK-47 class in the competition, and for MOST of those guys, the magazine change handicap is rather obvious.

I personally would probably NOT consider something like this myself, BUT I can see the interest.

Where are you getting those prices? I've been seeing all kinds of deals, and got some good USGI and also new ones at $10 each (more than ten years ago I got some USGI at $6 each)

Didnt ramline or someone offer a mag that allegedly fit both the ar and the mini? I am pretty sure they did. if this is the case i would think a magazine modification would be doable. I have been wanting to try it buiyt i cant find the 2 ar mags i picked up in a yardsale years ago.

Ramline made the AR/Mini-14 combo mags that were designed to fit both guns. I've read mixed reviews on these mags so I guess they were far from a failure, but I wouldn't call them a success either.

The Ramline combo mags are narrow up front like a Mini14 mag. AR15 mags are wider up front and would require the bottom of the Mini14's reciever to be milled out so the magazine would fit high enough to feed a round into the chamber. This would probably make the reciever weaker and surely void any warranty.

Just strip your Mini and take an AR mag and try to fit it. You'll see the problem. ;)

Well, that clears thing up for good. Thanks for the tech!

I don't see how reliable an AR mag is. Have a few 20rd (colts, advantureline), can only feed 18rd reliably, if load more the rear of feeding lips will open up and cause the round to nose dive when pushed forward. Guess the aluminum material isn't rigid enough.

At least the factory mini mags are steel, so I guess this problem won't happen  .... right?

the 30rd AR GI seems ok though. But because of the 20rd experience I don't dare to load these aluminum mags to the max either......

And I heard AR mags were originally intended to be use only once anyway? (doesn't mean they can only be used once though)

Save yourself the hassle and get some Pro Mag polymer magazines. I had converter M-16 magazines 28 years ago when I first got the Mini-14, they were total pieces of garbage. I was able to get some factory 20 rounders and 10 rounder which work flawlessly. The only aftermarket magazine I would reccommend is the Pro Mag or Mec Gar.

This is from my experience, there may be other good aftermarket mags but I have good experience with Pro Mag and Mec Gar makes factory mags for many gun makers.
