Well I finally recieved my back ordered Promag steel 30's. Tapco must have just got them in and they just arrived today. They seem to be a good quality mag in construction and fit but only some range time wiil tell theyre true quality. Here are some pics.

This is exciting news! Thanks for the info Tyr.
Keep us posted on their quality.

Do you have a factory 30 that you can compare it side-by-side to?

Hey Tyr, how does the 30's compare to the 20's as far as fit and finish. The pictures you showed look good but are they as good as the 20's?

They are the same quality as the 20's weather they will work as well I cant tell untill get some range time. The only difference I see is the welds and the magazine locking tab here is the 20 and 30 .

MidwayUSA has moved their date back by 3 months.
Natchez still don't have them either. (This is what I'm holding out for, their price shows $12.99, which is what they sell the 20 round steel and 30 round polymer for)

This is about the second or third time it has been moved back, why is it taking so long to get these out to the other vendors?
I hope it's because ProMag has took their time and produced a high quality magazine that functions properly. One can only hope!

They look like they were made by a different company. The rear tabs are different. the seams are cut different, and the spot weld patern is different.

I'm not saying this is bad at all. It just looks different that the 20 rnd mag to me.

Yep they are different, if the Ruger 20 and 30 round mags are identical and the Promag 20 is an exact copy of the Ruger 20 then they must have based theyre 30 on a different mag.

Actually, the Ruger 30 rounders were made just like that. Looks like Pro Mag tried to copy the factory on both the 20s and 30s. FWIW, my PMI and Masen 30rd mags are made the same way and they always worked great.

Now this sounds like good news to me!

The mag catch tab was properly done---that's EXACTLY how factory 30-rounders are made. PMI is the only other one I've seen done that way-------if a 30-rounder has a sheet metal tab like the 20's---I've never had it work-----the welded on tab is the only way to go on a 30.

how is the sheet metal thickness? looks about the same? <_<

I am more worry about the lips strength (thickness) than anything else.

Looks pretty damn close to my factory 30.

My ProMag steel 30 is (was) almost identical to my Ruger factory 30's.

But, alas, it was defective, and after 3 weeks, I still have not been shipped a replacement.

bringing this thread back from the dead - how do the steel 30 rounders function in comparison to the poly's and steel 20's?

Off topic:

Don't give up hope, it appears CProducts may 'save the day' about mid 2007 with some 30 round mags.

the Promag 20's have worked like a champ for me. Hard to tell them from a factory 20 in every important measure as near I can tell. I have not tried the steel 30's yet.
