Skip the high-cap mags and get a scope and mount. CDNN has some really good ones. I have a 4x scope on mine and it is better than any hi-cap mag.

I have four 30's and 2 20's that work great. I got them from my gunsmith who had probably 20 or so mags. He gave me the box to take to the range and try out, so I could find the ones that worked the best. Some of them wouldn't lock in the rifle, as soon as the bolt went back they would fall out, others didn't feed good, or when the bolt came home on an empty magazine and hit the follower it would go vertical. And some outa that weren't that bad, I just chose the top six. I don't know what make they are. I just got 2 usa's with a russian i just bought but haven't tried them yet. Best thing is if you can find someone local that will let you try them out first, cuz there are good ones out there. Or order some and make sure they have a return policy. The ones I have now function great, and they look cool in the sks
What brands are the good ones?

They don't have any markings on them. I can post pics and maybe someone can ID them

I vote stay away from the Hi-caps in the SKS. Get an AK if you want more then 10 rounds :)

I couldn't agree more.
All the aftermaket Hi-cap magazines for the SKS are a waste of time. Sometimes you can get lucky and get a reliable one out of the wrapper, but the other ninty nine percent of the time you'll get jam-o-matics, and your bolt will slam home once the magazines empty. If you really want to give aftermarket SKS hi-caps a try the USA brand. From what I've read they seem to work the best out of all the other SKS aftermarket mags. Usually most USA brand magazines are junk but for some reason USA seem to be the best aftermarket SKS magazine, although a little tweaking may be neccesery.
Also be aware that if you live in the United States you must replace a certain number of your original SKS parts with United States made SKS parts if you want to legally install a detachable Magazine or a Hi-Cap magazine onto your SKS.
In the long run it's cheaper to buy a AK.

I just purchased 2, 30 rnd mags from the sportsmans guide (usa made) and before I took them to the range I had to do a bit of tweeking. I just looked at the angle of the top feeders and bent them to be even. Then I took the springs out and stretched them out to add more pressure to the block/follower. I have not had a jam yet with over 200-300 rounds fed so far.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span>
Pay attention to J Greer's warning. Attaching a detachable magazine to a SKS could get you 10 years of Federal service. jeep

I actually had to sand the inside of my magwell to ACCEPT the aftermarket hi caps... I mean they WOULD fit, if I forced them... but nothing to do a "quick mag change"
after playing with them for a couple days, I put the factory mag back on... for EXACTLY THE REASON of the ABOVE POST!!!!
I love my guns too much to be without them for so long...

I bought a SKS new from a Dealer who built the gun for himself and started another project and agreed to sale it to me. It has the fiberforce stock, muxxle break etc on it. It came with the factory Mag (Which was taken out) and 3 30 RD Mags one 20RD and a ten round detachable Mag. They were all USA Brand Mags but I knew I had the original 10RD Mag I could put back on the gun in less than 5-10 minutes. Much to my surprise each Mag works great,I do get a fail to eject very seldom but it happens when the lacquer from the crappy Wolf ammo I have builds up. The SKS is a great rifle and a fun low maintenance rifle to plink with. My self if I buy another one day and it has the factory Mag in it I wont bother to replace it. The 10RD factory Mags are fine by me.
Safe Shooting!! :usa:
Now no one likes a high capacity magazine more than myself, but with the SKS I prefer to keep it original. The factory ten rounder is just fine, and you pretty much know it will work properly!
Good Shooting!

I love my SKS. First, lets clearify the question. Do you have a standard SKS or "sporter" version that takes AK-47 mags. This "sporterized" modle is harder to find but I thought I mention it for clarification sake. I have both and you will know the difference when you buy the mag and it doesn't work. The standard SKS mags are fixed and you have to modify the gun to remove the original all the way.
I have purchased many SKS "standard" detachable mags to replace the factory fixed 10 round. The USA and Promag are problematic and always need some tweaking to get them to work right.
Indyarms is right, most guns will need some degree of sanding or carving on teh stock to get tehm to fit right.
BEFORE YOU CUT YOUR STOCK TRY SEVERAL DIFFERENT TYPES SO YOU DON'T TAKE TO MUCH WOOD AWAY.
The best no hassle ones I have used were from Cobray. They are a plastic body mag. I was suprised when they just popped right in and even held the bolt open on the last round!
J Greer is right though. Make sure you have your US and Non-US parts counted and sorted out so you don;t violate any federal laws. Usually changing the gas tube, dust cover, taking of the bayonet and getting a US trigger makes everyone more than happy. Most parts are easy to find and pretty cheap. Besides, the aftermarket US parts will probaly be of higher quality and more adaptable to aftermarket parts.
Anyone know how these work?

cma g21: They just install like the factory original mags and feed through the open action. They are not an easily removeable mag but "drop dump" like the originals.

If you own a Yugo then DON'T use a detachable magazine. The Yugo has a grenade launcher and sights, night sights and a bayonet which require removing the features if you want a hi-cap magazine (which may be of dubious functioning) to be legal. The Yugo has a C&R status and WILL lose the status when you start changing or removing features.
L.E. Schwartz has a website explaining the legalities of modifying the SKS due to the idiotic laws and the 1968 GCA (which is a copy of the 1938 Nazi Gun Control Act) at: http://www.victorinc.com/SKS-FAQ.html

I'm sorry. What I meant to ask was, does anyone know if these feed reliably?

That's why we have this forum so you can get answers. I don't know but I don't want to lose you to the BATFE for breaking some chickens**t law which does nothing to curb crime but endangers decent law abiding and gun owning citizens.
If you can install one legally and it works the more power to you. Even if you have to feed it with stripper clips it's more fun to shoot 30 rounds instead of 10 every time. I learned to feed my Yugo (which is illegal to modify) with stripper clips quickly. The bolt has a channel for the stripper clips to enable fast loading.

I have found the 10 round mags (SKS, Mini-30) keep me from rapid firing too much, and keep my barrels from overheating.

I know this is old but for reference sake. i just put one of these without the start in my yugo and it works perfectly.

If you have ammo on stripper clips then you can reload your magazine almost as fast as changing magazines. Use the channel in the bolt carrier to guide the stripper clip and slide the rounds into the magazine and close the bolt and your SKS is ready to shoot. No worries about breaking the ididotic law nor the hassle of finding a hi cap magazine which will work. I would NEVER pay $50 for one of these magazines, they're available for around $20 at the fun shows.
