I am just wondering is there any high quality extra-cap mini-14 mag existing, such as 40rd and 50rd stuff. I think I saw some 40rd PMI before, are they anygood?

Yeah, PMI made some 40 rounders and people have mixed results. Personally, the ones I have witnessed have performed perfectly. But they are still probably the best mag out there for the Mini that is >30 rounds.

I have been fortunate enough to find two Bingham 40 rounders.
Each functions flawlessly in my Mini's.

how much do these extra-cap mags usually go for?

I am thinking about modifying Galil 223 mags if I decide to get a used mini-14 for match purpose. There are Galil 50rd mags selling for $30 or so.

I paid $20 for one of the Bingham's, and $25 for the other.
I also recently picked-up a PMI SS 40 for a buddy for $25 at a gunshow.

Will a Galil mag physically fit in a Mini-14's mag well? I have tried a AR style mag and the only issue with making it work is its alittle too wide at the front. If the Galil is narrower then this is a good thing. Does anyone have a Galil mag to measure and take a pic of the feed lip area? That sounded kinda dirty hehe ;) Thanks.

I think someone modified a AK mag to fit a mini-30, quite some modification. I assume the mini-14 and 30 has the same mag-well, also I assumeed the Galil 223 mag is narrower than a AK mag, so it might be easier to mod Galil 223 mag for a mini-14. I wouldn't mod a 35rd Galil, but a 50rd steel......might worth a try since the highest cap banana mag for mini is 40rd or so. (the drum mags don't count ;)

If you have to go through a lot of trouble to make something, make it unique and good............... ;)

The Mini-30 has a wider mag well than the Mini-14, and if I remember the AK mag mod was using its follower and spring to go in the Mini-30 magazine, not the other way around.

cajun, if I understand it right both 14 and 30 shares the same stock, the same stock bracket, which forms the mag well. So I think the mag well should be the same.

I wasn't talking about the mod posted here. There is a link in another post which goes to another board, and it showed a modified AK MAG (complete mag) for mini-30. http://www.assaultweb.net/cgi-bin/ultimate...c;f=50;t=000169

Now the question is whether the Galil 223 is indeed narrower than a AK mag. Have anyone compared them before?

An AR style mag won't fit in a Mini-14 magwell because the front of the magwell gets slightly narrower and the AR style mags do not have this narrowing quality. It will fit front to back but you need to take out a 1" section (roughly) of the AR mag spine to get the mini-14's mag catch to function, drill a hole in the front for the catch, widen the mag catch grove on the trigger guard by 1mm on each side so the spine fits, and then widen the front of the mag well on the Mini-14. I stopped at the widening part because I didnt want to take material off of the receiver...... But if a Galil mag has a step down in the width at the front or is narrower this would be great!!

I have some PMI 40's. I think I had to adjust the feed lips on one or two but they all work now. I would stay away from the 40's because they are hard to load fully. Cal's has had good deals on the Ruger original 20's and these may be the best value in the long run. They were intended for LEO use and are so marked. I think 20 round mags are quite adequate for the Mini.

:ar15: I own two PMI 40's and they work flawlessly. I did use a Ruger follower for smoother operation. I do this to all my mags. For most uses greater than 30 round mags tend to be akward and clumsy. Especialy when in the prone or kneeling position. They're great for burning ammo in the backyard though! :ar15:

I just bought a Mitchell Arms 40 round Mini-14 mag.
It is identical to my Bingham 40's, and my PMI 40.
All three brands function perfectly in my Mini's.

Say can any Mini-30 & 14 owners substantiate this? Will a Mini 14 mag fit in the Mini-30? If so then maybe putting a Mini-30 follower in a good Mini-14 20-30 rnd mag and trimming the feed lips might work to make a good larger capacity Mag for the Mini-30? :o

223 round and 7.62x39 have differnt taper, so the mag body need to be more curvy in order to hold the 7.62x39 right......
