The weather was somewhat decent so I snuck off at
noon to see if I could still hit paper. Wind was
tricky-- 0-15mph. Shot at just over 100yds.

Load was GI brass, 450cci primers,
22 gr 4198imr, 50 amax bullets. Mini14 with 16.5"threaded
barrel, homemade blooptube, trigger job and bedding, 2x7Burris
compact scope.

This target is represenative of what I've been chasing
the past few times out. The first three went .25",
the fourth opened it to .75" and the spoiler went
1.5". The last one is like some I've fired over a chrono
and were 100fps slow.

Time to try some different loads, although this is not
too bad for a mini, flier excepted. I scored it a 44.

Good shootin mini-mizer,

If you figure out how to get rid of that one flyer myself and a couple thousand other guys would like to hear how you did it! That's still good shooting tho. It certainly makes minute-of-coyote! :D

Good shooting mini-mizer. Just guessing at the flier, you said some of your rounds are 100 ft per sec slower? Are you weighing your brass? This can make a diff. Also shooting from the same spot on your rest each shot will give more consistent muzzle flip. Just some suggestions.

I have a NEF with the heavy barrell in .223 that will shoot these rnd subMOA
all day long. My loads work in other rifles well. I heard a fella say once that
the mini has a "direct impingement unmodulated gas system" & that makes it
more sensitive to velocity deviations than other systems. Beyond me..

I think of the saying trying to make a silk purse out of a sows
ear.....when I think of making my mini into a target rifle. Although from the
targets I see posted here it is definately possible. I guess for me,
it is what it is---a workin mans rifle that shoots pretty darn good.

It seems to me that the shooting technique is half the battle, my mini at least
seems that it like to be held just a certain way, and it reacts to subtle changes
dramatically. Might try a different stock.

Seems the more time I spend
shooting the better it groups. I think the remainder of the season will
be spent busting PD's and practicing off hand.

Shoot On.....

Your friend may be right. We will see if someone can un-impinge their unmodulated gas system in the MOA club  .

Great target MM, sounds like you have a wise friend, sometimes I'll get a good group and just think "I was lucky and the mini got careless to drive me crazy on doing it again!" ;) Its all good tho, just means more shooting, I'm still waiting to get to the range when turkey season is over next week!
