View Full Version : Tested out my Pro Mags today.
My friend and I went and burned a little powder today and I took my mini and the 2 20 round Pro Mags I picked up at the gunshow last weekend. Between the 2 of us we ran 500 rounds through the rifle with those mags. They worked perfectly no jams and the bolt locked back every time. I used Winchester and some wolf .223 both functioned fine. I think I wiil pick a few more Pro Mags up, hopefully when promag's metal 30 rounders come out they will work as well.

Awesome, good to hear. Glad you started off on the right foot when it comes to Minis and info surrounding them. Too many people propagate false info, like no good mags existing.
*EDIT* Pro Mag is also making 30 round Thermold copies that are out right now, might want to pick one of those up too to try. I don't think the GAS guy has those though.
The Gas guy only had Pro Mag 20's and no name 20's. Tapco has the Pro Mag thermolds and someone on Gun broker has real thermolds I may have to try them. Its a sweet little carbine and no one will make believe different. :D
Be sure to read all auction text CAREFULLY!
I searched "Thermold" on Gun Broker, and the only auction that I found (for Mini-14) says in the title "Thermold", but if you read the text carefully, it says "Thermold style". It is also clear from the photos, looking at the base plate, that these are Promag Polymer 30's (use the Mag Photo sticky to help with ID).
I have had excellent luck with the Promag Polymer 30's, but they can be found for a lower price. True Thermold mags, if you can find them, are going for about $40 each.
There is a guy over at AuctionArms.com that has a set of 5 Promag Polymers (labelled as "Thermold") for $78.
Copes, http://www.copesdist.com/mini14.htm , also has them for $14.99.
Mini 14 magazine (http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=30648833) Here is the link to GB I dont see any mention of Pro Mag.
I see what you mean, but the seller is being deceptive.
He does not say anywhere "ProMag", but notice he does not say "Thermold", either. He says "thermolded".
If you look at the photos of the ProMag Polymer baseplates
http://www.perfectunion.com/forums/index.p...opic=1087&st=15 (http://www.perfectunion.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=1087&st=15)
you will see that the base plate flares-out, away from the side of the mag.
Then look at the baseplate for a true Thermold
http://www.perfectunion.com/forums/index.p...topic=1087&st=0 (http://www.perfectunion.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=1087&st=0)
and you will notice that it doesn't flare-out from the side.
All I'm saying is buyer beware. Themold is a trademark of Master Molder (a company that was driven out of business by the AWB in 1994). Unfortunately, I have seen MANY auctions that state either "Thermolded" or "Thermold" and are actually ProMag Polymers.
Again, I love the ProMag Polymer 30's. I have 8 of them, and I have 13 true Thermolds. Both are great mags!
I just don't want you to be tricked by these sellers. Don't pay Thermold prices for a ProMag!
If you would like for me to take a photo of the two types side-by-side, and email it to you, I wwould be happy to.
Thanks I see what you mean. I decided to try the Pro Mag 30 round steel mags from Tapco, ordered 2 I'll post a report when I get them and test them out. :D

The mag pic in the GB auction looks like an AR mag to me.
If you look at the follower, the first round goes on the left side of the mag. All the Mini mags I have the first round goes on the right. Second, there is no "nub" on the follower to activate the bolt lock on the last shot. And lastly, look at the back spine of the mag. It is solid from top to bottom. How would it lock into the mag well?
Plus if you right click on the pic from the auction and check the properties, the URL address says "PM-MINI1430b.jpg". PM= Pro-Mag?
Good eye, klutz!
That is most definately a photo of a ProMag ARF 30 round Polymer. They are also making these 30's for ARFs, and you can tell they are ProMags by the flared-out base plate.
Some sellers will use a "stock" photo, and not include a photo of the actual mag. The seller is probably not even be aware that this is a photo of an ARF mag.
