I first bought a stainless 10/22 with a plastic stock. The stock was too short, and had no good chin rest. I traded it after having installed a bipod adapter. But I didn't like the clumsy beech wood stock at all. It was square and heavy. I got a choate stock instead. I made my own chin rest, prolonged the butt and free-floated it. While I really like this rig, people kinda look funny at you if you bring it to a grouse hunt. So I decided to do something about the beech wood stock, figuring that I wanted the 10/22 to look classy at grouse hunts, and save the choate rig for crow and magpie hunting on the farm.

Geeting rid of the coat was easy. The pistol handle now has a palm swell and is angled as right to left to fit my hand, I have short fingers. I reduced the size of the fore end, installed a bipod adapter. The plan is to make the wood get that English red tinge. This means getting it stained with a walnut color, then oiled and waxed. After that, the receiver will get a bedding. Wha-la! Pics will be up shortly.

Gordito - your braver than I - I have several old (new) 10/22 stocks. Every time I get one out to work it over - I look at the shape - the wood - and do not have the heart to butcher it up :( - shows how much confidence I have in my wood working skills...
Keep us posted on the work your doing - maybe someday I will try something like that.

Hey Coyote,

It's really not that hard. It just takes a lot of time. (I'm driving my wife nuts with the dust and the smell of wood oils). If you have several wood stocks lying around, it doesn't really matter if you mess the first one up, does it? I'd give it a try if I were you. Lately, there have been some nice wood stocks in the mini section here at PU, tiger stripes and all...

Looken good gordito. So you guys hunt birds with 22 LR? We use mostly shotguns over here for birds, except for crows. The 22 LR is good for crows.

Hey Cajungeo!

Swedish Grouse hunting is done in the mountains, much like in Scotland. In the fall, one walks with bird dogs that raise the speckled grouse and then you shot at them with shot guns. This is the fancy way of hunting grouse. Lots of CEO's and rich Italians and Germans fly in for these hunts. In winter, one puts on snow camo, and skis. In the meantime, the grouse have adopted white snow camo, too. Then you hunt with 22LRs and 22 WMs, by skiing, lying down with yr backpack as the rest and you shoot at ranges up to 80-90 meters. There are bag limits (8 a day) as this is on state land.

The coolest way of bird hunting, which I have yet to try  , is tree-top hunting. Then you ski, watching for capercaillies feeding in pine tree tops. Then you shoot at them with handloaded 6,5x55 or 30.06 FMJ at distances up to 150 meters. But people are jealous of these hunts and you have to know someone to be invited.

I'm playing with the idea of making a grip knob out of red deer antler and ebony. My brother-in-law found a red deer antler on a hike on state land, and gave it to me. It is kind of spongiose in the middle though, I wonder how it holds up to a whitening with hydroperoxide, and a two-component glue. Anybody have any experience to share?

I hate to sound redundant, but that is a cool rifle gordito.

The only thing I know about deer antlers is they make good knife handles, I believe they are hollow. Also stricking 2 together attracks bucks.

That also sounds like fun, hunting on ski's. There is a similar Olympic event.

Thanks Mark sz71,
It's been wonderful on the range, a real shooter. My vintage canon printer broke down so I have yet to print out the targets for the PU 10/22 competition. But you'll see some results soon.
