MINI-14/30 M.O.A CLUB.

This Contest is to Qualify for Membership to the Mini-14/30 MOA Club. The rules are simple, but membership will be difficult. I don’t expect many members will qualify. Membership will only be for the best of the best. The best rifle’s shot by the best shooters.

As we all know the Mini isn’t noted for extreme accuracy. It will require you to do some tuning and/or modifications to your out of the box Mini. The Tips & Tricks section, and the Accurizing section can help you get the most out of your Mini. You will also have to hone your shooting skills. As with any sport, skills are developed by studying and practice. The very best in any sport are the ones that work at it the hardest.

RULES

1. Rifle - Only Ruger Mini-14 and Mini-30 Rifles will be used. No other rifle please!
A. Barrel/receiver must be “in” a stock.
B. Barrel cannot be clamped in a “vice” or similar clamping device.
C. Struts, stabelizers, shrouds, and similar devices that clamp the barrel, and are “part of the rifle” is okay.
2. Range - 100 yards or 91.4 meters, measured, not “gustimated“.
3. Target - We must all use the same target. No other target allowed. Since most mini scopes are not target scopes it will be permissable to use color or use white out for the colored center part of the target only.

4. Qualifying - 5 shots per target. Maximum shots allowed per sheet is 25.
A. 4 targets out of 5 on “same sheet” must have 5 shot groups that measure 1 MOA (1.049”) or less. The 5th group can be omitted. Each of the 4 targets group must have 1 MOA or less, not averaged. *See following post.
B. All groups will at least touch the black 1” ring and be contained in the 2“ ring.
C. Write group size of each group, and Date fired on target. Then post, and tell us a little about how you did it.

Misc: Type of sight, ammo, and modifications to your rifle is up to you. As with all our shooting contests you are on your Honor.

Most of us have shot that lucky group, even some sub MOA groups. It will take some work (well maybe a lot of work) to make it consistent. Custom barrels, and mini's with some sort of stabelizer/strut/shroud/tunner will have an advantage.

Members will be posted in a MOA Member's only sticky. I am working on giving members a special Avatar as a reward. So who will become the first member?

How To Measure Groups

Recently there has been some confusion on how to measure group size. There are special tools that a match judge has, but we being more informal can get near perfect readings on our groups by using simple tools. Here is the How-to.

Tools Needed

6-inch calipers are accurate and measure to the .001". Very handy tool and easy to read. You will use them for many projects. I have seen them from $12 at harbor freight. Midway, Natchez, etc. has them around $19.

Metal 6" scale. They cost about $3 and are graduated by .010" marks. They are less accurate and harder to read, but will work. A kids school plastic ruler or wooden yard stick are too crude and inaccurate to use unless groups are unquestionably below or above MOA. They may be off by 1/16" or .062 or more.

Dividers can help measure group size when using a ruler. Those little lines kinda jump around. The dividers stabilize things. With calipers dividers are not needed.

Bullet. The holes will close up during transport or handling of target. You will need to insert bullet (not case neck) into holes before measuring to open up. If you don't the group will measure smaller than it really is. You can verify this by using the calipers to measure open hole size and compare to bullets actual size. .224 for the Mini-14, and .308 for the Mini30. With care this will be accurate to +/- .002".

How to Measure Group Size

Measure Center to Center of farthest apart holes not accurate as you will guess the center of 2 holes, but good for a quick check.

*Measure Outside to Outside then subtract bullet dia. This will yield true center to center group size. Accurate only if you have re-opened holes. Best to use for that one ragged hole.

*Measure Outside to Inside. Measured outside edge of one hole to the inside edge of the farthest hole. This will yield true center to center group size. Accurate if holes are re-opened, and no subtraction is required. Probably the easiest and quickest, method to use.

*Recomended

This sounds like a lot of verbiage, but it only takes a few seconds to measure once you understand the how-to. I usually measure groups a couple of times to make sure of consistent readings.

So good luck and good shooting. ;) :sniper:

This is an on going contest. With all the struts and stabilizers, plus the target Mini's I expect several will make this elite group. So good shooting and good luck.
