View Full Version : Thoughts on 7mm-08?

Hello,

What do you guys think of 7mm-08? I am thinking about something nicely in between .223 and 30-06. The ballistics are very nice and the ammo is not terribly expensive. The only real downside I can see is the lack of ammo choices. .243 is much more popular but not as powerful.

Thoughts?

Stooxie-
Man, you know how to pick 'em! 7mm-08 is a terrific cartridge. Short action size, modest recoil, and all the attributes of .308, (accuracy), but w/ the better ballistics of a .284" bullet. I've seen them used on just about everything. A 7mm mag it's not, but it's also a lot easier handling, and cheaper as well, if you reload. I would consider it suitable for all but the largest, most dangerous North American game. If you wanted something just a little hotter, consider 7x57mm mauser.

2rangers nailed it.

The only thing I could add is that if you were going to be doing alot more shooting of smaller game with it, like antilope, coyotes, or even pdogs, I'd get the 243. If you're going to do more shooting of deer sized game I'd get the 7mm-08. Both are very very versital cartridges, just the 243's a little lighter, the 7mm-08 is a little heavier. If you need a little heavier I'd get the 7mm-08, if a little lighter I'd get the .243.

I swear, you and I think alike!! :D I was going over in my head what would be the breakdown in game size as I was typing the prev. post, and I came to the exact same conclusion!! :sniper:

Ha, well, I guess that means we're both right or both wrong! Either way I'm in good company. :ar15:

Thanks to both of you guys for the feedback!

This would definitely be for small to medium sized game up to deer. I have 30-06 to handle anything above that (up to it's limits, obviously). I like the popularity of .243 but I think it's just a wee bit too much of a varminting cartidge. For the most part I will be eating what I shoot so the 7mm-08 should serve me better then .243.

stooxie with the 30-06 they have .55 grain excelerators that you can use for small game, but when i went and shot some out of my gun it put the group level but an inch to the right.

The 7-08 is a wonderful cartrige. I have a Rem 7 from the custom shop, with scope, loaded, and with sling weighs only 7 lbs. Very accurate with any bullet i have tried, minute of angle accuracy with factory loads. Very modest recoil, less than my 243.

Are you talking about the factory ammo or ones that you reload with a sabot?

The 7mm/08 is truely a great cartridge. In our hunting camp we have several. We load em up with 140gr Partitions and they stop em dead. If I were to consider going with a smaller round I would skip the 243 and go with the 260 Rem. The 6.5 is a well known killer. It is a bit smaller than the 7mm but still has plenty of punch. The 260 will also give you a wider range of bullet weights than the 243. JMHO

As I was reading through I was thinking the same thing as Steve. I would go with the .260 also. I'm using a 6.5x55 96 Swede now for antelope, the .260 is basically a newer version of this round.

B) Go for it!! I have a 7mm-08 Imp and love it.I use it on everything from coyotes to whitetails.Do you reload? If not,you should. There are tons of bullets choices for the 7mm and you can use 308,243,260,358,& 7mm-08 cases.BUT...I must admit,I've been looking at building a 260 too! (Improved of course) :sniper:

I got myself a Weatherby Super Predator Master in 7mm-08. A local store had one left as it
is now discontinued. Weatherby only sells a 7mm-08 in the Synthetic Mark 5 as of 2005.

Love the rifle, love the cartidge!

The SPM (super predator master) are mark v actions. Not cheap either (what mark V is....) but the ones I've handled are oh so nice!!! I want one!

No it was not cheap. Frankly it was a lot more than I wanted to spend, but I
figured what the hell. I don't like to cheap out on things that I expect to save
my life or humanely take something else's (i.e. hunting).

The rifle is gorgeous. The bolt is smooth, the rifle is perfectly balanced, cartridges
snap perfectly into the magazine and the trigger is absolutely crisp with no creep or
overtravel.

The COOL thing about the SPM is that it's NOT supposed to be a light weight version.
Even though it has a fluted barrel, and it was replaced by the Ultra lightweight line,
this one is not all trimmed down. I'd rather have the extra pound on the gun to absorb recoil and heat. So, it's kind of the best of both worlds. (So naturally, the vendor discontinued it!)

I will post pics soon.

I just picked up a 7mm08 in a Ruger Compact. Stuck a Leupold 3x9 ( it was in the safe, I think a 4x would just as good) . It is a beaut! Cant' wait for deer season to try it out. It has a short pull on it, I will be adding a 1" pad to add some length. The price was right, it had hardly been used.
