I've been toying around for a while with buying a Yugo surplus M-59 SKS. It would make a good little plinker for fun and can stay happily fed on cheap WOLF ammunition. Does anybody else here own one and do you like them?

The M59 and the M59/66 are both fine weapons. The M59/66 has the spigot-type grenade launcher and the launcher sights. The butt-pad is rubber, not steel. Some of the M59/66 rifles have flip-up front and rear night sights.

P.S. The M56/66 is easier to find and cheaper if I remember correctly.

I own one. I bought an unissued one for $105 out the door! I spent another $40 on 500 rounds of Wolf ammo. It has been a blast to shoot! No misfires or jams!

I just bought a folding stock that I am going to put on the gun. I also plan to modify it to accept detachable magazines.

I bought an unissued one last year. I decided to keep it stock, but I did have a trigger job. We have a great time shooting tennis balls with grenade launcher adapters and blanks. I find it a bit tedious to clean though. :usa:

Yeah I'd like to see photos of you shooting tennis balls off of the grenade launcher. Do you need a fin assemble for the balls?

This method we use M1A2 grenade adapters and blanks. The tennis balls can only
be used once (as they burn through) They go about a hundred yards. I am told that
actual grenade blanks will project it 4 times that distance. The other method we have used was created by the guy in the photo. I will post a picture as soon as I take one. He fashioned it out of muffler pipe. It slides over the grenade launcher and secures with a screw. He welded a cup arrangement on the end to fit a tennis ball. It works great. I believe there would be a small market for his device. I have had one on order for several months. :D

I'd like to see close ups. In the pic it looks like the tennis ball is slit, or bottom cut off.

The tennis ball is just stuffed into the adapter.

I just used regular Wolf ammo with the bullet pulled and stuffed with tissue paper. (poor man's blanks) Then cut a hole in the tennis ball and place on the launcher. Just be sure to check the bore and make sure nothing is stuck in it. when you go to shoot live ammo.

how big of a hole do you cut in the tennis ball?

Everybody who launches gernades remember your doing this at your own risk. Gernades are designed to be shot with special 7.62x39 gernade blanks Not your every day 7.62x39 blank. The special Gernade blanks use a slow burning powder to build up pressure saftly while regular blanks are quick burning type powders that create dangerous spikes in pressure. You probably will never experience any problems with the tennis ball setup since its so light, but don't say I didn't warn you.

Now for the M59 vs the M59/66 I love them both but I prefer the M59. The M59 is just an easier gun to move around with. Not only is M59 lighter and shorter it just looks better. Now if you like high speed plinking go with the M59/66 because the extra muzzel weight really helps the muzzel control, and of course the overall extra weight dappens the recoil of that vicious 7.62x39 cartridge :D Yes the M59 is usually about 20-40 dollars more then the M59/66, but this is because the M59's are nearly all gone, because most of them were converted to M59/66 in 1966. In the end its up to you to decide, but In my eyes you can't go wrong with ether firearm.
