I just picked up a used Chinese milled SKS, with the little triangle logo that has something in it that looks like a "36" at angles. I got it in a wood stock with a black synthetic gas tube (I guess they took it out of the nice stock when they sold it), it has no bayonet lug, and a nice blueing job. I got it for $140, tax and all, which is about $125 I think, before taxes. I have a buddy who is about to sell me a Ramline sporter stock for $30, and I am gonna put the gun in it, and scope it with the High Pro mount so I can put a shell deflector in it so I can use a full sized scope, and co-witness irons. Do I have to have 7 USA parts to have a detachable magazine? I wanted to set it up to use TAPCOs 5 round detachable magazines, so I can use it as a short/medium range deer rifle next year (5 round magazine limit), and have it as a loaner to be used as such. If I do have to USA it, will the detachable magazine count as 3 parts, the Ramline as 1, leaving me only three to come up with? If so, gas tube, and piston would be two for $35, and I guess for a last one I will buy a US trigger group and have some work done on it. IF I don't have to USA it, I will just use detachables on it with the Ramline sporter, and keep the military trigger, which isn't that bad for a SKS. TIA.

This is what I refer to as the "grey arey" of these rifles, as I am not exactly sure. Check out http://www.simonov.net/uberfaq.htm, as they may answer man, or all of your questions.

It's not how many USA parts, per say, but how FEW imported parts you use. These are the relevant parts in an SKS:
1. Receiver

2. Barrel

3. Bolt

4. Bolt carrier

5. * Operating rod [aka: driving rod; aka: gas piston extension]

6. * Gas piston

7. Trigger housing

8. Trigger

9. Hammer

10. Sear

11. Disconnector, bolt follower

12. Disconnector, rebound [aka: trigger mount arm]

13.* Stock

14.* Handguard

15.* Magazine body

16.* Follower

17.* Floorplate

As you can see, your magazine is 3 of those parts, so a US made stock/handguard will make for 2 more... As for the last two parts, it will be easiest to replace the Op-rod and gas piston. you can get these from TAPCO (http://www.tapco.com) pretty cheap. You will then have only ten Imported parts and hence a legal rifle! Hope this helps...
