Thanks to the two posters who suggested NEF in my question in inexpensive .223 rifles. I've been looking at NEF for a month or so now. Through sportingarms.com you can pick up their heavy barrel versions for $209 I believe. Quite the bargon. Only thing is, I would like my inexpensive rifles to be able to shoot Wolf, cheap commercial, and military surplus ammo. I'm heard that military surplus can stick in NEFs (.223 and .308) as the chamber is a bit tight? Does anyone here have an NEF and able to speak to such problems (or lack thereof)? The primary point of getting an expensive .223 (and possibly also a .308) is to have a reasonably accurate gun that one can have fun with. Thus functioning with military surplus ammo and cheap commercial (Wolf, etc.) is a must.
Thanks

I don't have an NEF centerfire rifle, just a .410 shotgun. I can't use Federal shells for just that problem...the shells won't eject. Also, you must be faithful in keeping the gun oiled (especially those with a blued finish). I kept mine in my closet and even with our dry climate here in SoCal, the barrel had some surface rust after a few months. If you end up going with the NEF, make sure you wipe down the barrel very thoroughly after handling it. Good luck! :D
I have a NEF .223 and I had extraction problems with reloads using Lake City military brass. I was trying the same loads that I use with no difficulty in my Mini 14. Found myself using a cleaning rod to poke out the emptys about 50% of the time. Switched to Winchester brass and no more problems.
Generally, Military brass is has thicker walls but my loads aren't maximum and there were no signs of excessive pressure with the LC brass.
